It is women’s semi-finals night at the US Open on Thursday evening as the two finalists will be decided out in New York on the biggest stage in the sport. Flushing Meadows has seem some fine matches from the ladies this year and we should be in for two more.
We have four women who will all feel they can win the title from here looking to make it into the final and with both matches being played under the lights the atmosphere should be electric and the quality of tennis sizzling.
Elina Svitolina vs Serena Williams
The first semi-final is between two women who have been to this stage of Grand Slams in the past as Elina Svitolina takes on Serena Williams. Indeed both ladies are competing in their second successful Slam semi having both made the last four at Wimbledon as well.
Serena leads the head-to-head record 4-1 here but it was Svitolina who won their last match albeit that was at the Rio Olympics three years ago. I do think the Ukrainian has got half a chance here though. I’m not saying she’ll win but she is exactly the kind of player that Serena has lost her last three Grand Slam finals against in that she gets that one extra ball back which can be the key to victory against Serena.
Svitolina is getting a 4.5 game start here and that looks one or two too many to me. Serena could still win but the way her opponent is hitting the ball and the confidence she is playing with I expect the fifth seed to stay close enough to the American superstar to keep within the 4.5 games she is getting in what could turn into a marathon contest, and if it does Svitolina would have half a chance of winning.

Belinda Bencic vs Bianca Andreescu
The second semi-final is a huge opportunity for two women who have never appeared at this stage of a major before as Belinda Bencic takes on Bianca Andreescu in the biggest match of the career of both ladies.
At the beginning of the week I had Andreescu down in the final of this competition but I’ve changed my mind now. I’ve done so for a couple of reasons. The first is that actually Bencic is playing some really good tennis and probably better than the Canadian whose amazing year might just be catching up with her. The second reason is that the schedule has gone right against Andreescu. She had the Wednesday night semi-final which went near on two hours in serious humidity while Bencic played in the afternoon and had a good eight hours extra rest. I expect that to be significant here.
When you throw that tough schedule into the mix and the sensational tennis Bencic is playing right now I think the Swiss star is worthy of support here. Bencic has beaten a power hitter in Naomi Osaka this week so Andreescu will need all her creativity to force her way past Bencic. If she is tired in the legs or the mind that side of her game might not come out. I’m with Bencic now.
