2019 WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Golf – Day 2 Betting Preview

The second day of the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play sees the middle round of group matches being played across Austin Country Club in Texas and it is a big day for those who lost their first matches as another defeat will see them eliminated.

Some big names got their campaigns off to a good start on Wednesday and if they can win again they will have one foot in the knockout stages ahead of the climax to the group stage on Friday, so there is much to play for still.

Round 1 Recap

It was an up and down day betting wise for us on Wednesday with only our main outright Jon Rahm winning his match although another one of our outright bets Kiradech Aphibarnrat lost up the last hole which was frustrating. Bubba Watson also lost on the final hole so we’ll need them to win on Thursday. Gary Woodland and Thorbjorn Olesen won from our group bets.

It was better in the match betting department with Matt Wallace and Matt Kuchar turning over a profit for us despite the losses of Alex Noren and Aaron Wise. We made a shade over 2pts on the opening day which we’ll be looking to build on throughout the week.

Thursday Matches

There is never a day without good matches on the card of these group days and Thursday is no different. From a European standpoint the pick of the matches is probably the one between Francesco Molinari and Thorbjorn Olesen while Justin Rose against Eddie Pepperell should be fun. Jason Day against Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson against Branden Grace look to be the pick of the matches. I’ll take three bets in other matches.

Phil Mickelson vs Jim Furyk

Match tees off at 15.59 GMT

Two experienced Americans head out relatively early on the second day of action when Phil Mickelson goes up against his Ryder Cup captain from September in the form of Jim Furyk and the left-hander knows he needs to win to stay alive after dropping his first match to Henrik Stenson.

Furyk had a fine win over Jason Day so a win here will have him in a wonderful position from which to make the knockout stages and continue his fine recent form. I like Furyk to get that victory as well. He shot a decent looking four under par for his round against Day and when you consider he was two down and under pressure early on that was good going. Mickelson only made three birdies for his entire round and only one on the scoreable back nine. This isn’t his sort of course so I think Furyk is a good bet in this one.

Keegan Bradley vs Lucas Bjerregaard

Match tees off at 16.21 GMT

Two men who had different results on the opening day were Keegan Bradley and Lucas Bjerregaard and they go out against each other in Group 5 on Thursday with the American knowing he is out if he loses while the Dane will almost be through if he wins having knocked off Justin Thomas on Wednesday.

Bjerregaard made a couple of double bogeys on Wednesday but had no other dropped shots on his card and he was unfortunate with the second of those. Bradley was well over par for his first game with Matt Wallace and that continued a dismal record that he has in this tournament which has now seen him go 11 matches without a win since he won his first match in the event. I didn’t think about it before the tournament but the way Bjerregaard drives the ball he is actually a really good fit for this track and having played it competitively now he should come on for that and I’ll take him to win this one.

Alex Noren vs Tom Lewis

Match tees off at 20.01 GMT

The final match on the card on Thursday sees Alex Noren taking on Tom Lewis in a clash between two Europeans who failed to win on the opening day but who had very different outings to say the least.

Noren had an absolute shocker for the 14 holes that he was walloped by Haotong Li in. He made two double bogeys and another five bogeys and barely hit an iron shot straight all day. I took him believing that a return to match play would revive his form but clearly it didn’t and I’m more than happy to oppose him here. Lewis held Brooks Koepka on the opening day and actually had chances to beat him but the half was no bad result if he builds on it here. Unless there is a dramatic improvement in Noren the Englishman wins this comfortably.
