It is the final day of the league phase in the CSA T20 Challenge on Friday where we have two matches which can still determine who the teams will be who features in the semi-final on Saturday and who automatically progresses to the final on Sunday.
The battle for third spot in the table will be the story of much of the day but top spot hasn’t been completely determined yet so we are set for a double header of action that should be full of drama and tension.
Cape Cobras vs Lions (08.00)
The opening match of the day is the least important of the two games as the Cape Cobras finish their regular season campaign against the Highveld Lions in a clash which sees both teams needing a big win to improve their place in the standings.
The Cobras all but exited the competition when the Warriors won on Thursday but a huge win will see them overtake that side and move into third place for a few hours at least. The Lions are guaranteed to be competing beyond the end of this match but saw their chances of making the final dented when they lost to the Dolphins last time out. It would take a pretty incredible turn of events for the Lions to top the table from here. Given that both need big wins to enhance their positions I don’t really want to bet on this match.

Dolphins vs Titans (12.30)
The second match of the day is probably the biggest one as it is effectively a quarter final for the pre-tournament favourites Titans as they go up against the home side Dolphins, who are well on track to go straight through to the final of the tournament.
The equation is pretty simple here. If the Titans win they will be in the semi-final but if they lose then their campaign will be over, so although the knockout cricket doesn’t officially begin until Saturday, for the Titans it starts right here. The big problem they have having lost their last two matches is that they face an undefeated Dolphins side who look to be getting better in the tournament rather than worse. Big batsmen with the bat haven’t got started for the Titans which is something of a concern.
The Titans appear to be shortening all the time for this match and I suspect that is because they need to win but I don’t think the Dolphins will want to go into the final off the back of a defeat so I’m siding with them because they have looked by far the better side to me so far. In Keshar Maharaj they have one of the best bowlers in the tournament and with a batting outfit that is performing much better the Dolphins appeal here.
