2020-21 Premier League – Thursday 17th December Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The midweek fixture list in the Premier League concludes with two matches on Thursday night and there is plenty of intrigue and interest in each one as we begin to head towards the busy Christmas period that often determines so much.

We’ve seen the main title protagonists already this midweek but Manchester United have the chance to remind everyone that they are capable of hanging around, while things could take another twist at the bottom half of the table.

Where to watch

Both matches are live and exclusive on the Amazon Prime Video service with the build up to the first one beginning at 5.30pm and the second one at 7.30pm. The matches themselves kick off at 6pm and 8pm.

Aston Villa vs Burnley (18.00)

The opening match of the double header on Thursday evening is a clash of the claret and blue as Aston Villa take on Burnley with both teams looking for a win to take into another weekend of action with them.

Villa appear to have a bit of a chalk and cheese element to their home and away form with their road record incredibly impressive and their home form very much indifferent. Burnley seem to be following a recent trend of theirs in that they took their time to find their feet but they are moving up the gears and are probably playing as well now coming into this match as they have done at any stage of the season. Their only defeat in five matches was at Manchester City but that is just a horrible match up for them. Villa’s home struggles might not be a coincidence as it is hard to break teams down and they might have that issue here. I’m happy to back Burnley to bring something away from this match with them especially when you consider that Leeds, Southampton and Brighton have all won at Villa Park in the last three matches here.

Sheffield United vs Manchester United (20.00)

The second match of the night comes from Bramall Lane where Sheffield United continue to look for their opening win of the campaign when they host a Manchester United team who seem constantly surrounded in doom and gloom but who are actually unbeaten in five in the Premier League.

Sheffield United have largely been competitive in matches this season even though they haven’t won any of them but that wasn’t the case against Southampton at the weekend when they were truly awful. They need to find something significant here but even if they do United are playing with a lot of confidence, especially on the road, and look to have too much firepower for this Blades outfit. Whether the Red Devils run away with this one or are made to work hard for their win like Leicester, Manchester City and Liverpool have been against Sheffield United recently, I do think they will win.

United are plenty short enough to win though so I’m going to add a bit of value to the price and take Man Utd to win and there to be over 2.5 goals in the match. Sheffield United have shipped three to Southampton, two to Leicester and four to Chelsea in their last five. The Red Devils’ aren’t convincing defensively so I’m expecting more than 2.5 goals in an away win here.
