Preview

It is the race for the European places which forms the interest over the course of the evening with the minor spots the initial centre of attention. Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are both chasing a Europa League place for next term and will be eager to see off Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa in their final home matches of the season respectively. The other early kick off comes from St James’ Park where Newcastle United conclude their home campaign against the already relegated Sheffield United.

Then it is Arsenal, Liverpool and West Ham United who are all in search of wins to keep their hopes of various European competitions alive going into the final day of the season. All three are away from home with the Gunners making the trip down through London to take on Crystal Palace while Liverpool head to Burnley. West Ham go to West Bromwich Albion knowing that a defeat will open the door to them missing out on European football altogether next term which would be a huge disappointment.

Betting

There are a couple of away sides who look far too short to me here and as such I’m pretty happy to take them both on with a decent handicap line. The first of those away sides is Arsenal. Quite how they can be around the 1/2 mark to beat anyone at the minute is beyond me let alone a Crystal Palace side who unlike in previous seasons have got tanked the last few matches. In fact, against Aston Villa at the weekend they played some really nice football and with fans back for the first time this year and Roy Hodgson managing in his final home match, I’ve got to think the Eagles will take it to this flaky Arsenal side. That might help Arsenal in a weird way as their creative players can get on the ball and extend their winning run to four matches but of those previous three they beat a terrible Newcastle side on the day, were fortunate to come past West Brom and parked the bus at Chelsea. Nothing about Arsenal convinces me right now so I like Palace with the goal start on the Asian lines, particularly when you consider they have drawn four of the last five meetings and won the other.

Everyone just seems to assume that now that Liverpool only have to win their last two matches to qualify for the Champions League that they will do that and all will be rosy. There are a couple of issues with that. The first one is three days ago they needed their goalkeeper to bail them out by scoring the winner against already relegated West Brom and now they go to a Burnley side who have already beaten them this season. As it turns out I think Liverpool will win this match but their young defence is surely going to be tested by the Burnley style with Chris Wood in the form he is in. I’m not convinced Liverpool are going to have enough of this their own way for a win to be automatic, least of all one which fully covers two goals on the Asian lines. Burnley will have 3,500 fans in the ground for the first time this year and they are all in for free so there should be a great atmosphere at Turf Moor. Any Liverpool win can be a narrow one, especially if Wood dominates the two young centre-backs.
