Preview
Norwich City are in action on Wednesday evening and the leaders have the chance to move seven points clear at the top of the table when they host Bristol City in front of the TV cameras. City will be looking to close in on the top six with a win of their own. Brentford are the only other team from the top six who are in action on the night. They host a Luton Town side who will be buoyant from their win at Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon. Middlesbrough are the other top half side on show on the evening. They travel to Nottingham Forest.
The other three matches all see sides lodged in the middle of the table battling it out. A completely out of form Cardiff City outfit welcome a QPR side who aren’t going much better while Hiuddersfield Town welcome a Millwall side who are struggling for wins to Yorkshire. The other match sees Birmingham City looking to build on a fine win over Middlesbrough at the weekend when they welcome Preston North End to St Andrews.
Betting
I’m a little surprised that Preston North End are not favourites to win at Birmingham, even allowing for the home side recording a decent win at Middlesbrough at the weekend. Birmingham’s form at home is an absolute mess. They won their opening match of the season there but have only won one of the last 11 since then and have only picked up one point in eight on their own patch. They’ve only scored eight times in those 12 home games too so clearly there is an issue there.
Preston have one or two injuries which might be the reason why they are not clear favourites here but they still have a pretty strong XI performing for them and even though they were beaten at Bristol City at the weekend, they generally have a decent away record with six wins from their 12 away outings. Importantly Preston have goals in them on their travels and can use the pace they have in wide areas on the counter attack if they can’t dominate the ball. On a level ball line I’ve got to be with the visitors here.
