After the excitement and drama of the Euro 2020 qualifying semi-finals on Thursday night, the attention switches to the UEFA Nations League on Saturday where the first part of the third round of matches take place across the continent.
Although this is a new concept in just its second season, this tournament can provide a gateway for a spot in the World Cup in 2022 so there is plenty of need to take it seriously and ease a little of the pressure from the qualifiers for that tournament which begin next year.
League A
It is Group 4 where the action comes from in the top league on a reduced card on Saturday night due to those who played in the Euro 2020 qualifiers needing the extra recovery time. The pick of the two matches come in Kiev where the new boys to this level, Ukraine, host a Germany side who will be looking to find their best form once again. The other match in the section sees Spain looking to maintain their early control of this group when they welcome current strugglers Switzerland to Madrid.
League C
There are two matches in League C on Saturday and they both come in Group 1 which has the early kick offs on the day. Montenegro picked up a pair of wins in the opening week of matches and they will go in search of a third straight win when they host Azerbaijan while in the other match in this group an improving Luxembourg side host Cyprus in a match that is actually quite an important one for the home side as they have every chance in this group despite their loss to Montenegro last time out.
League D
We have a full set of matches in League D on Saturday with two matches in Group 1 getting the action off to a start. That sees the Faroe Islands, who are a much improved side these days and buoyed by the run of one of their sides in Europe where they were narrowly denied a place in the Europa League group stages, hosting a Latvia team who will be looking for their first win of the campaign. Andorra host Malta in the other match in this group as the two sides expected to struggle will look for a rare win. In Group 2 Liechtenstein will be looking for a win when they host Gibraltar with top spot in the group the reward for whoever does come out on top.

Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of the afternoon with the first of them coming in one of the opening matches as Montenegro host Azerbaijan. There isn’t a whole lot to like about Azerbaijan in this competition and they should be there for the taking for a Montenegro who have started their campaign very well with successive wins and they will be looking to take full control of the group by winning here. Azerbaijan did come up with a win against Cyprus last month but that win doesn’t carry a whole lot of weight from a form guide point of view. At this level I’m looking for the teams with standout players and in Stevan Jovetic, Montenegro have that. They can get the win here.
I’ll stay in League C for my second bet which comes in the form of the Faroe Islands who are an improving nation on the club and national scene at the minute and can take advantage of that when they host a Latvia side who have been very ordinary for far too long now. Latvia could only open their campaign with draws against Malta and Andorra and they will soon find out that there isn’t much merit to those results. The Faroes are in a good groove at the minute and are one of the minnows who are moving forward rather than stalling. If there is a winner in this match it can be them.
