The final set of group matches in this season’s UEFA Nations League begins on Tuesday evening when the first nine of them are played out ahead of the remainder of them coming along over the course of Wednesday.
That means that over the course of the evening we have promotion, relegation and semi-finals spots on the line on what should be a pretty good night of football even allowing for the relatively low number of matches.
League A
There are four matches from League A on Tuesday night with the action coming from Group 3 and Group 4. We already know that France will be the semi-finalists from Group 3 so all that is at stake is who will be relegated. Sweden are currently bottom of the table so they’ll need to get something out of their trip to Paris but Croatia know that if they beat Portugal they will stay up regardless. Portugal are already safe so they aren’t playing for much here.
Group 4 is where the important action comes from on Tuesday evening where we have a straight shootout for top spot in the group and the semi-final spot. Germany host Spain knowing that if they avoid defeat they will progress but if Spain win it will be them in the last four next year. At the other end of the table Switzerland need to do a job on Ukraine if they are to survive. If Ukraine avoid defeat in that match they will remain in with the elite.

League C
Group 1 is the only group that is on show in League C on Tuesday evening and everything is on the line in the two matches in this section. Luxembourg gave up the chance to be in control of their own destiny when they lost to Cyprus at the weekend so they now need to better the Montenegro result when they welcome Azerbaijan to have a chance of getting promoted. Montenegro will go up if they beat Cyprus but promotion will be secured if they just match the Luxembourg result. Cyprus need to win that match to have any chance of avoiding the relegation play-off.
League D
We have a full set of matches in the basement league where there are two big matches. The first of those sees Malta hosting the Faroe Islands knowing that they need to win big if they are to push for a place in the promotion play-off. The Faroes enter that contest knowing that if they avoid defeat they will have their shot at promotion. Gibraltar host Liechtenstein in Group 2 knowing that if they avoid defeat they will also be involved in the promotion play-off. A big Liechtenstein win will see them competing in it. The other match sees Andorra hosting Latvia.
Betting
Montenegro have gone off the boil a little bit lately but they have their destiny in their own hands and I maintain that Cyprus are nothing special. They were very much second best until a sending off from nowhere turned the game in their favour against Luxembourg at the weekend and while Montenegro will have gone to Azerbaijan expecting to win a red card stopped them in their tracks which wasn’t ideal.
The good thing for Montenegro is that point took them above Luxembourg in the table so they know they will be promoted with a win in this match and I expect that intent to be enough to see off a Cyprus side who have been ordinary throughout the group. Given what is at stake I don’t expect Montenegro to take Cyprus to the cleaners as winning is the primary aim and you would think they would protect any lead they get rather than risking it. Montenegro to win and under 3.5 goals looks good to me.
