2020 BDO World Championship Darts – Day 1 Tips and Betting Preview

The opening day of the BDO World Darts Championship sees both the men’s and women’s events getting underway at the new venue of the Indigo at the o2 in London. It does so with two sessions of action as the biggest tournament on the BDO calendar kicks off in style.

There is a mixture of preliminary round matches and first round games in the men’s draw while two of the women’s first round clashes will be sorted out on the stage too, so there is lots to look forward to on Saturday.

Afternoon Session

We get going with a first round match in the men’s draw as our outright punt Mario Vandenbogaerde is in action against the BDO World Trophy semi-finalist Sebastian Steyer in what should be a good way to kick things off. They are followed by a preliminary clash between the Australian player Justin Thompson and English ace Scott Williams with the winner progressing to face Wayne Warren in the first round of the tournament.

The ladies draw gets up and running in the third match of the afternoon and it does so with the former finalist Corrine Hammond going up against the late replacement for Fallon Sherrock in the form of the English based Swedish player Vicky Pruim. The final match of the afternoon is another men’s first round game and it sees the local lad Dave Parletti going up against Chris Landman in what looks like the pitch of the matches in this session.

Evening Session

The evening gets started with another men’s preliminary match as the World Cup singles winner Darren Herewini faces Simon Stainton for the right to take on Andy Hamilton in the first round of the main draw. The talented teenage ace then graces the stage in the women’s competition when Beau Greaves gets her first World Championship campaign underway when she meets the underrated Australian player Tori Kewish, looking to showcase her obvious talents.

The BDO veteran Ross Montgomery is on the stage in the penultimate match of the day when he gets yet another World Championship campaign underway with a preliminary round match with French player Thibault Tricole, where the winner will set up a meeting with Ryan Hogarth in the first round. The action concludes with the tournament favourite in the men’s draw as Jim Williams takes on a Gary Stone who is certainly no mug on his day it must be said.

Betting

I’ll go with just the one for the opening day. It is a day where I can see a few surprise results but the prices aren’t really enough to take on the favourites so I will leave them alone and largely take a watching brief with the aim of building up momentum as we go along in the tournament. Dave Parletti and Beau Greaves are among the players who could be worth taking on but I’ll side with just the one.

That comes in the form of the WDF World Cup winner Darren Herewini who I think will have enough to see off Simon Stainton. If you looked at the rankings you would take the Englishman here but we have to stress he has played most of the events whereas the Kiwi has played very few. We have seen Herewini on our screens before when he took four legs off Phil Taylor in the Auckland Masters a few years ago. That is no mean effort and neither is beating Glen Durrant at Q-School last year and he did that too. Herewini made the last 16 and quarter final of the first two PDC Challenge Tour events last year and that stage experience he got in the Auckland Masters can serve him well here. He clearly arrives with confidence high after that World Cup singles win, where nearly every round saw him win a deciding leg. That ability under pressure is another positive and so I like Herewini in this one.
