2020 French Open Tennis – Day 11 Tips and Betting Preview

The quarter finals of the French Open draws to a close on Wednesday and after a truly thrilling first day of action in the last eight clashes at Roland Garros on Tuesday, we should expect plenty of tension and excitement in Paris once again.

We saw the defending champion Rafael Nadal make it through in the early hours of Wednesday morning and during the day on Wednesday the world number one Novak Djokovic will be looking to join him as will a couple of standout women’s players.

Day 10 Recap

The highlight of a wonderful day of tennis was the match in which Diego Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem battled it out for more than five hours in a five-set thriller which went the way of the Argentine. The number three seed in the women’s draw also got sent packing when Elina Svitolina lost in straight sets to Nadia Podoroska. Elsewhere there were straight sets wins for Rafael Nadal and Iga Swiatek while the last remaining last 16 match went the way of Dianielle Collins who got the better of Ons Jabeur in a deciding set.

It was yet another of those up and down betting days for us on Tuesday. We actually looked good for the bet that lost when Martina Trevisan led 3-1 in the first set but she lost 11 of the next 12 games to put paid to that idea. We got most of the losses back though when although he went down in straight sets, Jannik Sinner was able to stay within 9.5 games of a Rafael Nadal who was certainly tested for the first couple of hours of that match.

Philippe Chatrier Court

With the women’s semi-finals on Thursday the first two matches on the show court on Wednesday are from the ladies draw and the opener sees the former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova taking on the German player Laura Siegemund. The second of the encounters is an all-American battle where Dani Collins will be looking to show she had no fatigue having had to play on Tuesday when she takes on the Australian Open champion and highest seed remaining in the women’s draw in Sofia Kenin.

The men then form the focus of attention later in the afternoon when the last two quarter finals are played out. The first one is a repeat of the Hamburg final as Andrey Rublev, who won that title, takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas who has looked very strong in this tournament since he trailed 2-0 in the first round. The stage will then be clear for a repeat of that controversial clash at the US Open as Novak Djokovic meets Pablo Carreno Busta, the exact same fixture that the world number one got default in over in New York.

Betting

I’m sticking to the men’s draw on Wednesday with the first bet over 39.5 games in the tasty looking clash between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev. These two are no stranger to a close match. At the US Open last year they played a four-setter which contained 48 games and in the Hamburg final last month they went to a third set decider and that one had 31 games in it so matches between these two recently have been tight and the way both are playing at the minute and the prize that is on the line I’m expecting this one to be every bit as close as well. It is hard to see this one being won in straight sets and usually there is a tight set or two at least when they meet. That should be all we need in a four or five set match to clear this line.

I’m going on a similar thought in the second of the men’s quarter finals where the games line looks a touch on the low side to me at 28.5 even allowing for how well Novak Djokovic has looked this week. While he has looked good the only player of any note that he has beaten is Karen Khachanov and I think Pablo Carreno Busta is an upgrade on him right now. That match had 28 games in it so there is reason to think the Spaniard can get this over the 28.5 line. Much will be made of the default of Djokovic in New York but it shouldn’t be forgotten that much of the reason why he was getting frustrated was that he was unable to get in front of Carreno Busta, who had just broken the Serb and would have served for the first set at 6-5 had the match not ended there and then. I don’t expect PCB to win this one, few will, but there’s enough to suggest he can keep a couple of sets close and possibly even nick one which will see the 28.5 game line covered comfortably.
