2020 German Masters Snooker – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second day of action at the German Masters sees the first round draw to a close and the second round getting underway at the Tempodrom out in Berlin, as one of the more popular events of the season heads towards the business end.

We saw the likes of Judd Trump and Mark Williams progress on Wednesday and they will be back in action in the evening session on Thursday, with some big names looking to join them in the second round before then.

Morning Session

There are three matches in the morning session of action out in Berlin on Thursday and two huge stars are on show in them. Ding Junhui will be looking to back up his fine run at the UK Championship when he begins his quest here with a clash against Scott Donaldson, while John Higgins goes up against Robbie Williams. Those matches are both on the TV tables with the other table in use staging the match between Alexander Ursenbacher and Mitchell Mann, which offers a good opportunity for the both of them.

Afternoon Session

The first round concludes with five matches in the afternoon session which sees Neil Robertson looking to back up his win in the first of the BetVictor Series events in Austria last week. He is on course for the bonus at the end of the series and a win over Ian Burns will strengthen those claims. That will be on one of the main tables and on the other Shaun Murphy will face a Ton Ford who has a decent enough record in this venue.

Three matches take place around the venue that aren’t in front of the cameras and they see the semi-finalist from last week, Gary Wilson, in action when he takes on Jak Jones, while the Chinese youngster Zhao Xintong meets Anthony McGill. The other match offers up a great chance for both Robert Milkins and Elliot Slessor to make it through to the last 16 of a ranking event and have the chance to go further.

Evening Session

Four matches make up the evening session and the pick of them is the one between the world champion Judd Trump and the classy Luca Brecel, who is a former finalist in this venue. The other match in front of the cameras is the repeat of the 2018 final between Mark Williams and Graeme Dott. The other two second round matches in the evening sees Nigel Bond looking for another quarter final spot after his run to the last eight of the UK Championship when he takes on the Indian Open champion Matt Selt while the other game sees Sunny Akani meeting Michael Georgiou for a quarter final spot.

Betting

There are a couple of bets I like and they both come in the evening session. I didn’t write an outright preview for this tournament but if I had done then Graeme Dott would have been my selection so instead I will take him to see off Mark Williams in their second round clash and gain some sort of revenge for his defeat to the Welshman in the final here a couple of years ago. To be fair to Williams he played very well in the opening round and a repeat of that would make him dangerous here, but it has been a while since he’s put successive performances together. Dott came from behind to see off Pengfei in the first round but looks in decent order and he can progress at the expense of Williams here.

Michael Georgiou hasn’t had the season he would have wanted so far but I recall it being said that he has moved over to Ireland and practices with the likes of Mark Allen so I would expect that to change in the not too distant future. It hasn’t always been because he has played badly why he hasn’t had a good season, his draws have been tough but that isn’t the case on Thursday evening when he takes on a Sunny Akani who is ranked lower than what he is in the rankings. There have been one or two signs of Georgiou coming good in recent times and at odds against I can’t resist a punt here.
