The final of the German Masters is one of the more anticipated days on the snooker calendar and it takes place inside the Tempodrom in Berlin on Sunday with a great conclusion to the second BetVictor Series event expected as Neil Robertson meets Judd Trump for the title.
Robertson is not only playing for the German Masters crown here but he will win the BetVictor Series and the bonus that goes with it should he be victorious. The world champion will be out to win his first title of 2020 here.
Neil Robertson
The Australian star Neil Robertson has been in sensational form over recent times. In this tournament and the European Masters last week he has come through nine matches and only dropped eight frames in that time, which is actually pretty mental when you think about it. You could argue over what he has beaten but that doesn’t matter when his record is that authoritative. That will give him a lot of confidence for this final.
Robertson powered past Shaun Murphy in the semi-final 6-1 after winning his previous two matches 5-0 and he has made it into this final for the loss of just two frames all week. He has made five centuries this week and a raft of other big breaks so the Australian looks to be playing some of the best snooker of his career. This will be the toughest test he has faced in this run he has been on though.
Judd Trump
From the moment the world champion Judd Trump arrived in Germany he has looked up for the battle here. He has seen off all challenges without too much fuss although Graeme Dott made him work hard in their semi-final. Trump was also involved in a cracker of a game against Luca Brecel in the earlier rounds so he should feel battle hardened as he goes into this final, and often that is no bad thing it must be said.
Trump has scored well here but not to the fantastic levels we come to expect from him, which suggests that his game hasn’t been absolutely perfect along the way. He will need to be pretty pinpoint if he is going to come out on top in this match, but we know he is a big game player so we shouldn’t be surprised if he does deliver his best snooker and come out on top. The atmosphere is sure to inspire him too.
Head to Head
This will be meeting number 32 between these two stablemates and it couldn’t be much closer on previous outings as Trump leads 16-15. That is played out in the frame totals where the world champion has a 136-131 advantage so whichever way you look at the past battles between the two things have been tight. Robertson has won their last two matches, the latest of which was the Champion of Champions final but overall they have competed in four major finals with them being shared 2-2. Everything suggests this could be a close battle.
Betting
History might suggest this will be close and it probably is usually a 50:50 but the way Neil Robertson has played this week I have to think he will come through here. He is playing so well at the minute and looks so assured and the bigger the occasion and the battle the better he often plays. To be fair to Judd Trump, that is often the case with him so these two gladiators should treat us to an epic of a contest but Robertson’s win in the semi-final oozed the aura that suggests he is the man to beat this week. I don’t think he’ll be beaten.
Whenever these two meet we are treated to a lot of centuries and the over 3.5 centuries in this final looks fair enough. There were eight centuries in that epic Champion of Champions final earlier in the season and I was at a match between these two at The Masters four years ago when they made six between them in a best of 11. These two seemingly bring the best out of each other when they meet and in this atmosphere and on a match table playing very nicely I’m expecting the centuries to flow once again here.
