2020 Modus A Night at the Darts – Friday 1st May Group 5 Tips and Betting Preview

Another week in the A Night at the Darts competition has reached its second to last evening and on Friday night as well as battling it out for our entertainment from their own homes, five players will be out for much sought after points to the overall league table.

This has been a great week of action in this particular league and nothing changed in that regard on Thursday evening. It would be foolish to think we will see any difference on Friday with some really good players on show.

The Format

Each night from Monday to Saturday five men will battle it out in a round robin group with the overall champion being determined on Saturday May 2. Matches will see the players compete over the best of 9 legs with each of them at home in front of a webcam throwing at their own individual dartboards. Scores can be found on Dart Connect and the tournament will be streamed on the bookmaker live streaming consoles and for free on Dartslive.tv.

Thursday Recap

It was a night where no fewer than eight of the 10 matches on show had either eight legs or the full nine and at the end of it, it was Wessel Nijman who won the group by virtue of a better leg difference from Martin Adams, with just one leg separating the two men at the end of the night. There were a pair of wins for David Evans and Kyle McKinstry but Mike Warburton’s return to action was a fruitless one as he was beaten in all four of his matches and continues to struggle overall.

It was a decent enough betting day for us on Thursday too. Once again we won with the Wessel Nijman 180s bet as his nine was enough to land the punt, with Adams once again his closest challenger with eight. Adams himself did us a turn in beating Kyle McKinstry in a deciding leg but unfortunately although Nijman beat Mike Warburton and had the most 180s, the Welshman took out 100 to deny us a third winner.

Friday Line Up

Kyle McKinstry is the man who has his day off on Friday night which means that we have the return of Fallon Sherrock to see if she can go one better than she managed on Wednesday when only leg difference denied her the title on the night. This looks an extremely competitive night of darts because Wessel Nijman, Martin Adams and David Evans have all shown they are in good touch this week. Mike Warburton could once again be bang up against it here.

We also have another guest appearance from Phil Taylor, the second week in a row he has got on the board as the talk of a comeback continues to be there. He will once again face all five players over the best of 7 legs but as with last week his scores will not count towards the league table. All eyes will be on his clash with Fallon Sherrock which is his final match of what should be a great night of darts.

Outright Betting

One leg was the difference between Martin Adams winning the group on Thursday night and coming second so the 6/1 on him winning here has to be looked at seriously. Ironically the last time Phil Taylor was on show it was Wolfie who topped the table so we know that the presence of the greatest to have lived doesn’t have a negative impact on his game. Adams lost his match to Taylor 4-0 that night so it wasn’t as though he was buoyed by a pleasant experience.

It must be said that Wessel Nijman and David Evans are justified frontrunners in the market but Nijman’s scoring looked very flat by his standards on Thursday evening and Evans’ usually crisp finishing was nowhere near what we would expect. We shouldn’t rule Fallon Sherrock out at 10/1 but I need to see another decent night from her before I have her in my group win calculations, especially after a day off. We saw last week that with a run of action Adams got better. If he does that he can deliver the goods at 6/1.

Match Betting

I’ll go with three of bets over the course of the matches as well. The first of them is the enhanced accumulator on Phil Taylor to win all five of his matches. I took him on in his final game last week against Boris Koltsov partly because I wasn’t sure how seriously ‘The Power’ would take it and also because I thought he might weaken. He didn’t weaken, he just ran into a brilliant deciding leg from the Russian, the only game the legend lost on the night. He also took it very seriously even with the banter going around and his darts looked pretty tasty. I can’t believe Taylor is giving up a Friday night, even in lockdown, if he doesn’t fancy bashing this lot up and if he is crisp on his doubles, and given that on paper his two toughest tests come early in the evening, I think the 15/2 on him producing a clean sweep offers a bit of value.

Going into the actual league matches and I’m happy to take the 10/11 that Wessel Nijman hits the most 180s in his match against David Evans. This is Evans’ first match after he plays Phil Taylor so he may well suffer the inevitable comedown that comes from taking him on, but even if he doesn’t, Nijman has won the 180s battle in their last five meetings, including on Thursday night where his solitary 180 was enough to land the spoils over nine legs. Usually the Dutchman has plenty more in hand than that. I’ve mentioned a couple of times this week that Evans switches a lot more than most and that is a key factor in the 180s here. Nijman has generally saved his best scoring for Evans and the 10/11 he hits the most 180s here is just too big.

Martin Adams has won both matches against Mike Warburton this week. He has won them by 5-0 and 5-4 scorelines although the score flattered the Welshman in the latter of those battles on Thursday night because Adams missed darts at a double in three of the legs Warburton won, finishing with a checkout rate of just 5/22 having thoroughly outscored his opponent in all departments, 24-16 in 100+ visits, 12-9 in 140+ and 2-2 in 180s – 38-27 overall. That sort of scoring buys plenty of darts at double and so I’ll take the even money that Adams nails enough of them quickly enough to win this no worse than 5-3. Only another raft of missed doubles or a couple of huge checkouts from Warburton keeps this close based on what we’ve seen this week. Neither are even money so I’m with the veteran here.
