2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Thursday 28th May Group 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The second pool of players are back in action in the Modus Icons of Darts competition on Thursday when the seven men once again compete throughout the day to try and walk off with the group title as we watch on hoping to be entertained during lockdown.

This group was quite entertaining on Tuesday when they first competed and those who we expected to feature at the business end didn’t do so and the lesser lights shone, so it will be interesting to see if that pattern continues on Thursday.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday seven players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the seven players will play each other once over the best of seven legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Wednesday Recap

For the second time this week it was Martin Adams who walked away as the group winner as the first pool of players were back in action on Wednesday. He picked up five wins on Monday and he had another five wins on Wednesday too. That was good enough to win the group by four points from Justin Smith, Boris Koltsov, Mike Warburton who was drafted in for Darryl Fitton, and Fallon Sherrock. Everyone won at least two matches on the day with Paul Nicholson and Keelan Kay coming away with a couple of wins for their efforts.

It was a frustrating day betting wise with the group really being there for the taking for Justin Smith but he wasn’t good enough to take advantage of that. It didn’t get much better when Boris Koltsov beat Keelan Kay 4-0 and there were only two 180s. Kay missed 13 darts at a double and if he had connected with any of them we would have got more legs and the over would have come in. He didn’t and it didn’t.

Thursday Line Up

We are back with what looks like the better of the two pool of players on Thursday and one or two of them in this company have a bit to prove after poor outings on Tuesday. David Evans is certainly one of them but he is back as the favourite to win on Thursday. Ritchie Edhouse took advantage of the off days for the fancied runners on Tuesday and will be looking to do likewise again, although he kicks off on Thursday as the second favourite to come out on top.

Arron Monk has disappointed in recent times and has drifted a bit in the betting as a result. Scott Mitchell and Andy Jenkins both won groups last week and they will be eyeing up the win on Thursday. Jarred Cole picked up four wins on Tuesday and he will be looking for another good showing, while there is a chance for Mark Webster to once again show his worth.

Outright Betting

I saw signs of life from Jarred Cole on Tuesday and that makes me think the 10/1 on him coming good and winning this group is a little too big. We should recognise the potential for the likes of David Evans and Arron Monk to dominate but neither have been as dominant since the change in format as they were before. Ritchie Edhouse is another man who has to be respected. He has suddenly caught fire and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if he goes in again.

We shouldn’t ignore Scott Mitchell and Andy Jenkins but for all their wins recently they seem to find a way to lose a match they shouldn’t and there isn’t really wiggle room for that here. I probably wouldn’t have backed Cole at the prices he has been going off at but you can get 10/1 on him winning on Thursday and that is probably too big now. If he can find four wins on Thursday he only really needs to maintain that form to be competitive again. Importantly his scoring looked to be coming back again. I’ll chance him at a big price.

Match Betting

I’ll go with one match bet over the course of the afternoon and it comes in the match between Arron Monk and Mark Webster, one where I think the youngster should come through pretty comfortably. To be fair to Monk, although his results weren’t great overall on Tuesday, he ran into some monster performances on the day and played much better than the bare wins and losses suggested, unlike Webster who got what he put in really.

Monk won their meeting 4-2 on Tuesday and I’m not expecting it to be any closer in a Monk win on Thursday. Webster is more competitive these days but he lacks the scoring consistency of Monk and certainly the power scoring that Monk has when he is on it. That brings things down to the basic scenario of whether Monk hits his doubles properly and if he does that, and he should get plenty of chances to do so, then he should have plenty in hand here.
