2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Tuesday 19th May Group 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second pool of players are in action for the first time this week in the Modus Icons of Darts tournament on Tuesday, as yet again seven men take to their home oches to get some competitive practice and give us a sporting fix during lockdown.

The field for this second pool looks like being an extremely competitive one and with no fewer than three world champions on show and a couple of the more talented younger players in the game looking to oust them, we should be in for a decent day of darts.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday seven players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the seven players will play each other once over the best of seven legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Monday Recap

It was a near perfect start to the week for Ritchie Edhouse who took down the opening group. He won five of his six matches for a very convincing start to his weekly campaign. He finished a couple of points ahead of Boris Koltsov, who looked well set having won his opening four matches only to lose his last two, and Fallon Sherrock. Jarred Cole picked up three wins for his efforts while there were a pair of wins for Jose Justicia and Mike Warburton. Scott Marsh saw his debut in the Modus leagues end with just one win.

It was one of those frustrating days for us betting wise. We came away from the day empty handed but were sitting on a guaranteed tiny profit only for Boris Koltsov to miss six match winning darts at double against Fallon Sherrock which would have brought the double in. Unfortunately Jarred Cole was useless against Ritchie Edhouse and my mood was made no better when he went on to win his next two matches in style. Scott Marsh finished bottom of the group but three of his five losses were in deciding legs. Had he won those he would have been in the mix.

Tuesday Line Up

Unlike in the first pool, all seven players in the second pool of action this week have been seen on the Modus live leagues before and they are probably headed by Jason Askew, a player who has been quite a regular over the last month or so. He’ll be looking to get back to group winning ways after running into the likes of David Evans, Wessel Nijman and Arron Monk in recent outings. Andy Jenkins had last week off but he won 14 of his 18 matches in the first week of this second phase and could rate as the main danger.

The three world champions who will all be looking to get deep in the mix here are the three time winner at Lakeside in Martin Adams, the 2015 winner there in Scott Mitchell and a man who has graced both World Championships in the form of Mark Webster. Darryl Fitton delivered an encouraging first week of action last week and if he builds on that he can be dangerous here. Keelan Kay completes the field and could have his work cut out.

Outright Betting

There is nothing to suggest that Andy Jenkins needed the week off because he was playing some fantastic darts the week previous to that and if he is in the same form here I think he’s the man to beat at 4/1. As I said above, Jenks’ won 14 of his 18 matches that week and he is certainly battle hardened after playing for most weeks in the first phase of the event. Based on his last outing the regular competition is bringing the best out of him.

This is a really competitive group and it is easy to make a case for a few in it. The credentials for Jason Askew are obvious while Martin Adams just keeps on going in this. His doubling concerns me though and could hinder his leg difference and I’d be surprised if this group wasn’t decided on that countback method. Scott Mitchell and Darryl Fitton are capable of bursts of wins too I don’t fancy Webster or Kay but while you can make a case for five of the seven, the 4/1 on Jenkins will do for me.

Match Betting

I’m going to ease my way into this pool of players on Tuesday and take just the one bet. I’m tempted to take Scott Mitchell on because I’ve mentioned throughout the Modus leagues that he seems to start weeks slowly for whatever reason but his first match comes against Keelan Kay which might actually ease him into his work a little, so I’ll scrap that plan and just take one which does actually involve taking on Kay.

That is in his match with Martin Adams, a match I expect Wolfie to win and win well. I’ve mentioned a few times that Kay looks a bit out of his depth at this level and now that you can see the players throwing as well his style looks ordinary. That is certainly not the case for Adams. After John Lowe, his throw would be right up there in terms of styles to copy and he used it to good effect against Kay last week. They met twice last week and Adams won 4-2 on both occasions but both times his finishing was ordinary at 4/14 and 4/12. He has so much in hand on the scoring though that he can afford those misses but as long as he stays relatively tight on the doubles I expect him to dispose with the youngster with a bit in hand.
