2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Tuesday 26th May Group 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second pool of players compete for the first time in the Icons of Darts event this week on Tuesday when seven more men toe their home oches in a bid to continue to keep us entertained during the lockdown period.

The first pool of players laid a bit of a marker down on Monday when they delivered some excellent darts and a really competitive group of action and hopefully we are going to get the same entertainment on Tuesday too.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday seven players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the seven players will play each other once over the best of seven legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Monday Recap

What a day of darts we saw on Monday and it was a group which went right down to the final match before it was decided. There was something of a surprise as well as the favourite going into the day, Boris Koltsov, was edged out on leg difference by the veteran Martin Adams after both had recorded five wins from their six matches. Pail Nicholson was the man who finished in third position with four wins while Scott Marsh, a late replacement for Justin Smith who had technical issues, and Mike Warburton both picked up three wins. There was one win for Keelan Kay while Darryl Fitton lost all six matches.

It was a positive start to the week for us from a betting standpoint as we were reduced to one bet with Smith not turning up. That came in the final match of the group where Martin Adams played Paul Nicholson. Wolfie had to win the match to win the group and he was carrying our money into battle as well. He duly obliged with a 4-2 win to give us a little profit on the afternoon and himself the bragging rights.

Tuesday Line Up

We have a really good line up on show on Tuesday, headlined by the man who has dominated many of these Modus groups over the last couple of months or so in David Evans. He is the favourite to win the group but a host of talent will be looking to deny him. Arron Monk is no stranger to winning groups in these things and he is back for another crack at it on Tuesday. Ritchie Edhouse won two of the three groups last week and is out for another success here.

Of the other four players on show we have two former world champions. The first of those is Scott Mitchell who is looking for a second successive group success having taken down his section on Saturday. The other is Mark Webster who himself is showing signs of life. The other two players on show are no strangers to us as they have played in a few of these groups now. They are Jarred Cole and Andy Jenkins.

Outright Betting

We saw the group on Monday go right down to the final game and given that the two favourites for Tuesday meet in the last match it would be no surprise if this second group of the week is not finalised until that time too. They are David Evans and Arron Monk and they are the two players I think this group will centre round although I’m certainly not writing off Ritchie Edhouse after his exploits of last week. I’m not completely against Scott Mitchell either but I do expect the main two to dominate proceedings.

At double the price of Evans, I will go with Monk here. He played in the Champions event on Sunday and averaged more than 90 for his three matches despite a bunch of missed doubles and with time to build his way into the action I expect to see a strong showing from him here. Evans will be tough to beat but this company feels better than be taking anything shorter than 2/1. You can make a case for a few in this group but the 7/2 on Monk is just about big enough to lure me in.

Match Betting

I’ll ease my way into this pool of players for the week with just the one match bet which comes relatively early in the day as Scott Mitchell takes on Mark Webster, a man who I think he should be beating with relative ease if he is on top of his game. He can sometimes take a while to get up to speed at the start of a week but at his best he has a fair bit in hand of Webster that I’m still prepared to take the Englishman in this battle of world champions.

Mitchell twice beat Webster 4-1 last week, averaging over 100 on both occasions. He lost 4-3 in the other match but averaged almost six points higher than the Welshman so there was an element of timing about that result. The fact is for me that Mitchell is the better and heavier scorer of the two right now and I don’t expect him to miss enough doubles to allow Webster into the game. Webster will need to be checking out in 15 darts or being thereabouts after that amount. I don’t see it. I think Mitchell wins with a bit in hand.
