2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Tuesday 2nd June Group 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The Icons of Darts event brought to us by the team at Modus Darts continues on Tuesday, when the second pool of six players grace their home oches and our streams for the first time this week to battle it out for the group title.

We saw a competitive day on Monday where the format was much better for everyone involved and that theme should continue throughout the course of what looks like an interesting day on Tuesday, given the players we have on show.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday six players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the six players will play each other once over the best of nine legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Monday Recap

The extended format which allows players to build their way into matches brought out a competitive day of darts and it was Scott Marsh who took full advantage of that as he came out on top of the group on leg difference. Martin Adams was the other man who won four matches on the day to secure runners up honours. David Evans was a win back in third while Fallon Sherrock and Paul Nicholson had a couple of wins to show for their efforts. It was a day to forget for James Hubbard who went winless on the day.

Hubbard’s woes were music to our ears as we backed him to lose all five on his matches and he duly delivered on that front. Not only did he lose all five matches but he only won five legs in them so the 6/1 on him losing the lot was never really in any danger at all. It wasn’t quite a perfect day for us though as Fallon Sherrock missed a dart at double 16 to bring the over 7.5 legs in for her match against Scott Marsh.

Tuesday Line Up

We have another entertaining line up on show for the second pool of players this week. They are probably headed by the Russian star Boris Koltsov, who has really shone over the best of seven legs but wasn’t as convincing over the best of nine in the first phase of the leagues. Jason Askew went the other way. He was very strong in the first phase but didn’t find the best of sevens to his liking as much so it will be interesting to see how he fares on a return to the format which allows his scoring power to come out.

Four other players will be looking to deny them the first group win of the week. Two of them are world champions in Scott Mitchell and Mark Webster and logic would dictate that they are likely to be better over the longer distance. Andy Jenkins is back for more after a couple of up and down weeks. He might fancy the longer format as well. Keelan Kay is the other man in the group and he hasn’t really shown much regardless of the distance.

Outright Betting

I think there are a couple of players who will welcome this change in format. Scott Mitchell is one of them but I think Jason Askew is the man who will really enjoy it. His scoring power is insanely good and the extra distance means that there is the strain and pressure on his doubles that there might otherwise have been. Before he moved to the evening competition, in a week of afternoon darts in the first phase, Askew won two groups and finished second in the other three so he clearly enjoys the slightly longer distance.

Of the others, I respect Scott Mitchell enormously but I regularly say that he isn’t always the best starter to a week and that is a concern. I wouldn’t be completely surprised to see a good showing from Andy Jenkins or Mark Webster, while Boris Koltsov has shown he prefers the shorter distance. Keelan Kay hasn’t shown anything to suggest his odds are out of line so although 5/2 isn’t the best price known to man on Askew topping this group, I do think his chances are better than that suggests.

Match Betting

I’m going to see how the players adjust and react to the format and see if my hunches ring true so I’m not going to go too mad with bets, taking just the one bet over the course of the day with the intention of building up as the week goes on if everything allows. The bet comes relatively early in the day where Boris Koltsov meets Keelan Kay in a match where I expect the 180s to flow throughout the contest.

I actually took a bet in the 180s between the two last week and it didn’t land because Kay butchered every double he looked at and lost 4-0. The other two matches they played though went to deciding legs and contained seven 180s and five 180s. You’ve got to think there are likely to be at least seven legs here so the over 3.5 180s has every chance of landing. Both men will have played a match prior to this one so they have the chance to get their throwing arm going for the week. There is a nice rhythm about their matches and I don’t think four 180s are beyond the pair here.
