It is ‘Moving Day’ in the Scottish Open on Saturday although with the weather forecast the way it is it might be more of a survival of the fittest rather than a day where big moves are made at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick.
The cut has been made at the halfway mark and just 10 shots separate first to last so with the expected weather conditions on Saturday literally anyone can still win this tournament if they put a solid final 36 holes together.
Round 2 Recap
At the halfway mark in the tournament it is the Dubai Desert Classic champion Lucas Herbert who leads the way on 11 under par. He has a one shot advantage on Robert Rock with two very experienced Englishmen another shot back in Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. Mike Lorenzo-Vera sits fifth on eight under ahead of a trio of players who are on seven under. They include our pre-tournament pick Marcus Kinhult as well as Kalle Samooja and Joost Luiten. Tommy Fleetwood is stalking the leaders on five under, six off the lead.
It wasn’t a good day for us betting wise with Min Woo Lee never at the races but even if he was he ran into a Pablo Larrazabal who shot one of the best rounds of the week so far and the Australian was never in the scene to match that. That meant we came away with another loser on what is becoming a frustrating week on the match front but we have a couple of days to hopefully salvage our losses so far.
Saturday Betting
One or two bookmakers have a third round leader market priced up but with the forecast for rain all day and the winds strengthening to pretty outrageous levels late in the afternoon it probably isn’t a market to bet on. I say that because there is a chance that someone on three or four under par gets round in level or slightly lower than that and the leaders get caught up in the wind then there is a chance that someone from miles off the pace could end up leading. Of course we are relying on the forecast to be correct for that to happen but either way the leaders are set to struggle which immediately puts us off getting involved in this market.

Saturday 2 Balls
Unlike the first two days the players are out in two balls on Saturday and hopefully Sunday too with the leading pair of Lucas Herbert and Robert Rock out at 13.15 BST. The marquee pairing is the one which is out just before them which contains Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. Other noticeable groups out on Saturday sees Matt Fitzpatrick and Padraig Harrington going out alongside each other at 08.05 BST while the 10.40 BST pairing of the defending champion Bernd Wiesberger and Andy Sullivan would have been popular with the crowds if any were allowed onto the course. My bet comes in the final two ball of the day.
Lucas Herbert vs Robert Rock
Match tees off at 13.15 BST
The final group onto the golf course consists of the man who has already on won the European Tour this year in Lucas Herbert and a player who is high up on the halfway leaderboard for the second week in a row in Robert Rock and they will look to maintain their position as leaders heading into the final round.
Rock bolted out of contention as quickly as he arrived in it last week though and that has to be a concern for me. He also isn’t the longest off the tee either which makes me think that his ball flight could get caught up by the wind. I think the power players are the ones to follow on Saturday and Herbert definitely fits that bill. He showed in Dubai where he won the Dubai Desert Classic that there is more to his game than just smacking it off the tee though. As an Australian who is based in Queensland now he’ll be used to the wind and of these two I think he is better equipped to deal with the tough conditions that are expected on Saturday afternoon.
