2020 US Open Tennis – Day 5 Tips and Betting Preview

We move into the third round of the singles draws at the US Open on Friday which means for the first time in the tournament the seeded players are able to take each other on which adds an extra dimension to the competition.

The odd example aside, we’ve still not really lost too many big names so the longer this tournament goes the quicker the good matches will come along. There are some decent ones on the card for Friday so we have much to enjoy.

Day 4 Recap

It was another day where the higher seeds on show cruised into the next round. On Arthur Ashe, Sofia Kenin, Dominic Thiem and Serena Williams all won in straight sets while there was also a comfortable win for Daniil Medvedev over on the Louis Armstrong Stadium. We did lose a couple of fancied runners over the course of the day though with Milos Raonic, Jo Konta and Garbine Muguruza all sent packing.

It was a level day for us betting wise with Kuznetsov not really offering up much resistance against a Karen Khachanov who I’m convinced is there for the taking this week. That was levelled out when Victoria Azarenka absolutely battered Aryna Sabalenka while the other bet we had was voided when Emil Ruusuvuori pulled out of his match with Casper Ruud in the third set with an injury.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

The 2018 champion Naomi Osaka is up first on the main court on Friday. She has managed to avoid the seeds and instead will take on Maria Kostyuk for a place in the second week instead. Osaka is an exciting young player and two more will follow her in the second match in the day session as the talented Denis Shapovalov will look to light up the Arthur she Stadium when he goes up against the leading American player remaining in the event in the form of Taylor Fritz.

The men actually begin the evening session as well as the world number one Novak Djokovic continues his quest to remain unbeaten for as long as possible in 2020. He beat Jan-Lennard Struff last week in the Cincinnati tournament and he’ll go up against him here. Petra Kvitova will have the honour of rounding off the show on the main court. She takes on the young American player Jessica Pegula in what should be a good match.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

Petra Martic is tasked with getting play up and running on the second court when she takes on the Russian player Varvara Gracheva. The former champion Angelique Kerber then has a slightly later date than she has had so far this week. She meets Ann Li before the men come out to play. Alexander Zverev is the first of the two exciting men’s seeds on this court. He faces the wily French player Adrian Mannarino before Stefanos Tsitsipas meets Borna Coric in what might be the underrated value play to be the pick of the matches across the grounds. The action on Armstrong ends with two Americans looking to make the most of their opened up draw when Shelby Rogers faces Madison Brengle.

Court 17

An even looking match gets us underway out on Court 17 when Aliaksandra Sasnovich takes on the seeded player Yulia Putintseva before the woman who toppled the number one seed is back in action as Caroline Garcia plays the American player Jennifer Brady. Former semi-finalist Pablo Carreno Busta then takes to the court to take on the Lithuanian player Ricardas Berankis in the final match on what is a pretty reduced schedule out on Court 17.

Best of the Rest

There isn’t a whole lot of singles matches on the outside courts now with fewer games from here on in but the rain of Thursday has meant some matches didn’t conclude and will have to finish here so as well as the likes of Anett Kontaveit, David Goffin and Filip Krajinovic being in action, players such as Dan Evans and Elise Mertens will be concluding their second round games as they look to make it into the last 32 unscathed.

Men’s Betting

There is only one bet that interests me in this set of matches on Friday and it comes in the form of Filip Krajinovic to beat David Goffin. The Serbian is yet to drop a set this week and while he is significantly up in class here, he has an unbeaten record against Goffin on a hard court too which will give him plenty of confidence. Goffin has dropped a set in both his matches in this tournament and faces his toughest test here too.

It is expected to be hot and steamy in New York on Friday after the torrential rain of Thursday has passed through and traditionally those are conditions Goffin does not perform to his best in. That has to be a concern for his fans but not for us punters as we can get Krajinovic on a -2.5 game handicap. Both his wins over the Belgian on a hard court came last year and they were 64 64 and 63 63 so there’s enough to think the Serb wins and covers the handicap here.

Women’s Betting

I’ll take a couple of overpriced outsiders in the women’s draw on Friday, the first being Caroline Garcia who looks like she is rounding herself into a nice patch of confidence. She thoroughly deserved her win over Karolina Pliskova in the previous round and having faced one heavy server Jennifer Brady isn’t going to hold too many fears for the classy French player. There were signs in the Cincinnati event last week that Garcia had put lockdown to good use when she took care of Sloane Stephens and that is continuing this week. Brady won the Lexington event but she didn’t beat anyone you wouldn’t have expected her to in that run. The odds suggest Brady is an emphatic favourite here but I don’t see it like that. I think Garcia is value at 5/2.

Another player I think is value is Madison Brengle in the late all-American clash with Shelby Rogers. This is a clash of styles in that it is the defensive skills of Brengle against the aggressive attacking of Rogers and I fancy at this stage of the tournament defence might win the day. Brengle has only made 19 unforced errors in her two matches so far and while Rogers is likely to lead the winners count, if she has a few nerves with the opportunity ahead of her it could easily go pear-shaped for her. Brengle is actually the higher ranked of the two and she feels overpriced to me.

Daily Accumulator

Once again a five-set turnaround denied us the daily accumulator on Thursday so we are back to the drawing board on Friday. We’ll go with a fourfold for Friday.
