2020 US Open Tennis – Day 7 Tips and Betting Preview

The second week of the US Open begins in New York on Sunday when half of the singles draws plays down to the quarter finals. The singles matches are consigned to the two main arenas from here on in which elevates the profile of the event.

We still have a whole host of big names left in the tournament so we are gearing up for a big second week of the competition. A number of those players are on show on Sunday including Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka.

Day 6 Recap

Saturday lacked the drama that Friday provided but we still got treated to a couple of five-set wins mixed in with a couple of very easy victories. There were easy wins for Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime while Alex de Minaur and Vasek Pospisil came through in a decider. In the women’s draw Serena Williams came from a set down to beat Sloane Stephens while the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Sofia Kenin both came through in straight sets.

Unfortunately that Serena comeback cost us a decent price winner as Stephens couldn’t get the job done and then annoyingly later in the night Marin Cilic failed to take any of six break points in the fourth set which would have seen the games line covered in his match against Dominic Thiem so that was certainly not the night we needed at this stage.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

There are four matches on the main stadium court on Sunday and we get underway with what could be a feisty clash between Yulia Putintseva and the eighth seed Petra Martic, neither of whom are going to want to concede so much as an inch to the other. Once they are finished we have the men’s favourite Novak Djokovic on show. He goes up against the former semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows in Pablo Carreno Busta.

The night session is always good around the middle weekend of the tournament and that is certainly the case here as we get going with an excellent looking men’s match when the exciting Denis Shapovalov takes on the solid David Goffin in a match which could well go on for a while. The day concludes with the 2018 winner Naomi Osaka meeting Anett Kontaveit for the second tournament in succession.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

The other four matches take place on the Louis Armstrong Stadium court where we get going with another former champion as Angelique Kerber goes up against the rising American star Jennifer Brady. Speaking of rising stars there is another on show in the second game of the day when Alexander Zverev continues his quest for a first Grand Slam title. He takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before Petra Kvitova looks to continue to come through the draw when she takes on the unheralded American player Shelby Rogers. The final match on the Louis Armstrong sees the Houdini man from the last round in Borna Coric going up against Jordan Thompson for a quarter final spot.

Men’s Betting

I’m going with one in the men’s draw on Sunday and it comes in the night session where I’m going to seek out a bit of value in the match between Denis Shapovalov and David Goffin. Shapo has had to do things the hard way so far in this tournament and he goes into this match off the back of a 3h31 marathon against Taylor Fritz after a couple of four setters to come through to begin with so there is plenty of work in his legs so far.

I’ve been opposing David Goffin so far in the tournament but to be fair to him he has actually looked better the longer the event has gone on and he’ll be confident of winning this match after beating the Canadian in Tokyo in their only other meeting at the end of last season. This is a 50:50 match but the extra freshness of Goffin could be significant. I don’t see either winning in straight sets so maybe the value way is to take Goffin to win but both men to win a set.

Women’s Betting

My bet in the women’s draw comes in the night session as well where I’m expecting quite a lengthy contest between Naomi Osaka and Anett Kontaveit, much like we saw in the Cincinnati event here last week when Osaka came through 7-5 in a deciding set. I’ve seen nothing from either player to suggest that Osaka is much better here than she was there and the same with Kontaveit that she is no worse than she was last week.

Osaka has come through the draw nicely but she has had to go to a couple of deciders already and hasn’t faced a seeded player in the tournament just yet. Kontaveit dropped a set to Dani Collins in the opening round but has seen off Kaja Javan and Magda Linette for the loss of 10 games since then. This just looks like being an extremely competitive match to me and I would be surprised if this doesn’t have more than 20.5 games.
