The quarter finals of the US Open get underway at Flushing Meadows in New York on Tuesday when the top half of both the singles draws are played out inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium as we head towards the business end of the tournament.
We were due to have the likes of Novak Djokovic and Karolina Pliskova at this stage of the tournament but their demises have left us with a very open but equally extremely competitive looking day of action inside Ashe.
Day 8 Recap
Monday was a day that promised so much on the men’s side but offered relatively little as three of the four matches were won in straight sets by Alex de Minaur, Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev while Andrey Rublev came through in four sets. Of the three matches that have run since we wrote this preview in the women’s draw, all of them went to a deciding set with wins for Serena Williams, Tsvetana Pironkova while Victoria Azarenka and Karolina Muchova are in a third set as we write.
This tournament continues to annoy and frustrate from a betting point of view. Both bets we had on Monday lost and while Felix Auger-Aliassime was a proper loss, the Alize Cornet bet couldn’t be any more annoying if it had tried. The French woman was a break up in all three sets against Pironkova but could only win one of them which was frustrating to say the least. If that wasn’t bad enough our quarter bet on Maria Sakkari went down when she too went a break up in the decider and failed to win. Thankfully Rublev offered some comfort on a tough day.
Day Session
Jennifer Brady vs Yulia Putintseva
The first match up on Arthur Ashe on Tuesday is the opening quarter final in the women’s draw when the home rising star Jennifer Brady takes on in many ways the surprise package of the competition in Yulia Putintseva.
Brady has been in fine form since he return of the sport, first of all winning in Lexington and then following that up with coming through the draw here without dropping a set so far. Her power game is working perfectly. Putintseva has had to fight and scrap it out a lot more but she has done that successfully and isn’t likely to stop now. I expect Brady to win this but she’s been priced up pretty short, so much so that the handicap isn’t guaranteed to be covered. I’ll sit this one out.
Borna Coric vs Alexander Zverev
The day session quarter final in the men’s draw is the pretty close looking battle between Borna Coric who is looking for a spot in his first Grand Slam semi-final and Alexander Zverev who is looking to reach the last four in successive Slams having made that stage in Australia at the beginning of the year.
Initially we shouldn’t forget that Coric is playing with the house money were after his escapology act against Stefanos Tsitsipas in round three but now that Novak Djokovic is out of the tournament I’m not sure that statement holds sway anymore. Zverev is now the favourite to come through this half of the draw and it will be interesting to see how he copes with that burden of expectation on his shoulders. I think both factors will ensure we get a competitive match here. I expect to see at least four sets but I wouldn’t actually be surprised if all four of these men’s quarter finals go the distance given what is at stake in them. That makes me think over 38.5 games is the way forward here.

Night Session
Naomi Osaka vs Shelby Rogers
The night sessions on Ashe are always good in the second week of this tournament and this one begins in that fashion when the 2018 champion Naomi Osaka looks to book her spot in another semi-final when she takes on the big hitting American player Shelby Rogers.
Rogers has done exceptionally well to make it into this quarter final. She has battled hard and ridden her luck a little but she is hitting a clean ball and although Petra Kvitova gave up four match points against her, nobody can argue Rogers doesn’t deserve to be here. Leading into her last 16 match I thought there were vulnerabilities about Naomi Osaka but the performance she put on in her win over Anett Kontaveit was extremely impressive and I now wonder if she is improving round by round and getting ready to peak at the weekend. If she is she’ll come through here but there are enough question marks to make me leave this match alone.
Pablo Carreno Busta vs Denis Shapovalov
The final match of the day on the Arthur Ashe Stadium looks the most intriguing and might prove to be the best of them when the man at the other end of the court when the Novak Djokovic default was taking place, Pablo Carreno Busta, meets the exciting and talented Denis Shapovalov for a place in the last four.
It is easy to forget among all the craziness that ensued that it was actually the fine play of Carreno Busta that got Djokovic so wound up and had the Serbian not hit the line judge with the ball the Spaniard would have served to try to win the first set. That is because he played some excellent tennis and on that evidence he would have every chance of progressing here. To be fair to Shapovalov, he was as impressive in coming past David Goffin, who such was the excellence of the Canadian, soon ran out of ideas against him.
This one has all the hallmarks of one of those Ashe five-setters which we’ve not really seen so far. This one could well make up for that though. They met here in 2017 when PCB won three tiebreaks in a straight sets win. That highlights how close we can expect their sets to be. In their three other meetings they’ve had a 76 and a 75 set so I’m expecting lengthy sets and four or five of them. That makes me think we’ll get more than 38.5 games here too.
