2021 ATP Cincinnati: Western & Southern Open – Day 5 Tips and Betting Preview

The Western and Southern Open got back on track on Wednesday which means that on Thursday the entire last 16 can form the schedule of the ATP Cincinnati event, as we head towards the business end of the latest Masters 1000 event.

This was a competitive field to begin with and those capable of winning the title are already making their credentials known but some have to back up from Wednesday which won’t be easy so we could be in for an interesting day of tennis.

Center Court

The top seed and 2019 champion Daniil Medvedev gets the action underway on the main court on Thursday. He meets another man who has lifted this title in the past in the form of Grigor Dimitrov. Once they are done there is a women’s match before the Olympic champion Alexander Zverev takes to the court once again for a clash against Guido Pella. The other match on this court comes in the night session where Matteo Berrettini meets Felix Auger-Aliassime in what should be a very entertaining encounter.

Grandstand

It is the women who get the action underway on the second court on Thursday but when the men take to the court it will be the number four seed Andrey Rublev who will be on show. He meets a Gael Monfils who looks to be finding some form after a terrible 12 months or so. Once they are done we have a very competitive looking encounter on the court when the Norwegian ace Casper Ruud takes on Diego Schwartzman before the number two seed has the honour of opening up the night session as Stefanos Tsitsipas meets Lorenzo Sonego for a quarter final spot.

Stadium 3

The remaining two matches on the day comes from Stadium 3 where four more men will battle it out for quarter finals spots. John Isner has been in good form recently and he’ll look to continue that when he opens the show against the mercurial French player Benoit Paire. The pick of the two matches would appear to be the later one though between the Wimbledon semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz and the Olympic bronze medallist Pablo Carreno Busta.

Betting

I’ll go with just the one bet for the Thursday action and that comes in the second match out on Stadium 3 where Hubert Hurkacz meets Pablo Carreno Busta and I’ll side with the Spaniard who has caught fire in terms of his form in recent times. He is the more consistent of the two anyway and I would probably have backed him even if he wasn’t in the form that he is in but given that in the last few weeks he’s made the semi-final in Mallorca, won a title in Hamburg and come third in the Olympics.

In that time the Spaniard has beaten the likes of Marin Cilic, Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic so his confidence should be sky high. Hurkacz went well at Wimbledon where Medvedev and Roger Federer were among his victims but since then it has gone a little quiet. He has won two matches this week to be fair to him but he dropped a set to Davidovich Fokina and was double set point down to Andy Murray before being let off the hook. PCB is an upgrade on both of those these days and I think he can take Hurkacz down here.
