The CONCACAF Golf Cup was due to begin with both the opening matches in Group A on Saturday evening but with the fallout from the Curacao withdrawal meaning one of the games is delayed, we are left with the one match to get stuck into to start the tournament.
The match sees the defending champions Mexico starting their title defence when they go up against the team who came through the qualifying competition to make it into the event in Trinidad & Tobago.
Mexico
All eyes will be on the Mexicans at an AT&T Stadium which will feel more like the Azteca Stadium with the amount of Mexicans in it for the contest. They are the best team in the CONCACAF region but the gap between them and USA might have closed a little if the recent Nations League is anything to go by, so they have the chance to show that is not the case with a convincing performance to get their campaign up and running.
The main aim of these bigger sides is to move through the gears so that they can peak at the business end of the competition but in what is likely to be a two horse race the power of laying a marker down should never be underestimated. The scrutiny will be on the attacking areas for Mexico here as there is no Raul Jimenez and Javier Hernandez is a thing of the past so it will be interesting to see what the likes of Alan Pulido can do.

Trinidad & Tobago
If you go back 15 years or so the ‘Soca Warriors’ were the improving and emerging team behind the big three in this region of the global game. That cycle has well and truly passed though and the current side are floundering in the depths of the CONCACAF game. With that in mind, you could argue they have done well to qualify for the tournament and anything from here is a bonus but when you consider they needed penalties to get past French Guiana to make it here, it is hard to give them much hope.
There is still the odd flash of quality in this squad but this is clearly a part of the world where other sports have taken over and football has suffered. In saying that, if they can get out of this match relatively unscathed there is no reason why they can’t compete in their last two matches and maybe attempt to come out of the group. That would need an improvement on what we’ve seen recently but they have been in competitive action and that might be an advantage.
Betting
We have the slightly weird situation where the same amount of goals are needed to pay the Asian handicap line out in full as the goal line for this match so I’m happy enough to get on the over 3.25 goals in this one. I think Mexico will cover both lines but obviously should there be a freak Trinidad & Tobago goal on the Asian handicap it would have a massive impact whereas on the goal line it is a huge help.
I don’t expect T&T to score here but you never know in these opening matches, especially when the ‘Soca Warriors’ have played a couple of competitive qualifying matches to get into the tournament. In the season just gone Honduras beat T&T 4-0 and USA beat them 7-0 so there is the scope for Mexico to have some real fun here. However the goals are scored and whoever scores them I like over 3.25 of them here.
