The second day of the qualifying event in the German Masters takes place inside the behind closed doors setup in the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes on Wednesday when another bunch of players look to move to within a win of a place in the main draw.
In the main the big players made it through on Tuesday although Mark Williams was a surprise casualty which will keep the star names on their toes going into Wednesday and beyond. It is a day where the likes of Kyren Wilson and Stuart Bingham get their campaigns underway.
Morning Session
Yan Bingtao is the star on show in the morning session and he will be on one of the tables that are streamed. He faces the classy challenge of Sam Craigie, assuming the Englishman turns up which he hasn’t always done with 10am starts! World Championship semi-finalist Anthony McGill will also be on one of the streamed tables when he takes on the Chinese player Zhao Jianbo. Two other Chinese players will be in front of the streaming cameras with Zhao Xintong meeting Lee Walker on one of the tables and Lu Haotian facing Joe O’Connor on the other.
The other four tables will also be on show here as well and occupying one of them will be Daniel Wells and Jamie O’Neill while there is also a competitive looking clash between Jordan Brown and Rory McLeod on another of them. Aaron Hill caused a stir when he dumped Ronnie O’Sullivan out of the European Masters and he’ll be looking to do the same to Billy Joe Castle while the other match sees Liam Highfield taking on Jamie Curtis-Barrett.
Afternoon Session
Kyren Wilson will be the centre of attention on Wednesday afternoon when he goes up against the relatively unknown Zak Surety on one of the main tables. Dave Gilbert is also in action in this session and he will be looking to make smooth progress when he takes on the talented Chinese player Yuan Sijun while elsewhere on the main tables Michael Holt meets the lively French player Brian Ocholski who ran Ronnie O’Sullivan close in the English Open. Liang Wenbo may well be the man to occupy the other streamed table when he takes on a suddenly rejuvenated Ken Doherty.
Elsewhere Jak Jones will look to build on his excellent run in the English Open when he goes up against the Chinese ace Si Jiahui while the heavy scoring Tom Ford will look to move to within a win of a trip to Berlin when he takes on Gerard Greene. Jimmy Robertson is a ranking event winner on the continent in the past and he’ll look to take a first step to another when he goes up against Alex Borg. The other match in this session looks evenly matched where Chris Wakelin faces Stuart Carrington.

Evening Session
Masters champion Stuart Bingham is one of the headline acts in the evening session and he will definitely be on one of the main tables when he goes up against an Eden Sharav who has the tools to be competitive in that match. John Higgins is the other big name on show in the session. He faces Robert Milkins who had a decent enough run in the Championship League recently. Kurt Maflin hasn’t really got going this season but he’ll be hoping that changes when he takes on Martin O’Donnell while there is an all-Welsh clash when Matthew Stevens meets Michael White.
Elsewhere there is a clash between Mitchell Mann and Elliot Slessor while Ashley Hugill takes on Tian Pengfei in one of the tougher matches to call over the course of the day. Robbie Williams had an excellent run in the English Open where he took care of the newly crowned Champion of Champions winner Mark Allen and he’ll look to back that up when he faces a Florian Nuessle who will be eager to qualify for his home event. Ricky Walden is in action in the other match. He faces Xu Si.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets as we look to put the mess of Tuesday behind us. The first of those comes in the form of Ken Doherty who looks a big price at 8/11 to win three frames against Liang Wenbo. Wenbo can be very hit or miss and largely this season he has been miss whereas Doherty has been playing some nice stuff. I must admit I feared for the Irishman this season after the mess he made of the World Seniors final but actually he has been in decent enough touch. It took a monstrous performance from Mark Allen to sort him out in the European Masters and he only narrowly missed out on making the Championship League final recently. Doherty might not have it in him to get over the line against Liang if the Chinese player is on song but he is scoring well enough and has the safety game to get to three frames.
Si Jiahui burst onto the scene this time last year when he took care of Stuart Bingham and others in the English Open on his way to the last 16 there but since then he has won a grand total of four matches away from the Championship League so he really has to be taken on when he meets a Jak Jones who should still be buoyed from his run to the quarter final of the English Open last month. He took care of Jack Lisowski and Matthew Stevens in that tournament before running into a very good John Higgins. Clearly he isn’t facing John Higgins here so the Welshman should be expecting to come through this challenge.
