2021 Modus Online Live Darts League – Thursday 18th March Tips and Betting Preview

The Modus Online Live League continues on Thursday when we have the first of two double session days to entertain us throughout what should be another decent day of arrer flinging inside the newly built studio being used for this event.

Things are moving on quickly this week and we see the introduction of six new players over the course of the two sessions. They mix in with five players who have been entertaining us throughout the week to date.

The Format

We now know the format for the competition! There are three groups which make up the event each week. Group A has the same six players on the first three days. The winner goes through to the Saturday final while second and third are joined by three new players in Group B to be played on the Thursday and Friday evenings. The top two from that group move into the Saturday final group. The bottom three from Group A meet three new players in Group C on Thursday and Friday morning where the top two move into the Saturday final group where the weekly winner is crowned. Each group sees each player play the others once in each session. All matches in all groups are the best of seven legs and the bookmaker live streaming consoles and the Online Darts YouTube channel has all the coverage.

Wednesday Recap

Martin Adams was the man who came good on Wednesday with his four wins being enough to top the group on the day but it wasn’t enough to top Group A for the week so he heads into Group B for the remainder of the week. Arron Monk could only pick up two wins on Wednesday but that was enough to send him into the final on Saturday. Richard North won three matches on Wednesday while Andy Jenkins, Justin Smith and Jarred Cole all had two wins each.

Our bad luck has carried over into this event this week as we saw yet another loser come along from the jaws of victory when Arron Monk, who had doubles in each of the first five legs of his match against Jarred Cole, missed two match darts to win 4-1 and eventually got broken in that leg and although he went on to win the match in the decider that was no good to us because we was on the -1.5 leg handicap annoyingly. There is time to turn the week around but it needs to start on Thursday!

Group C

This group forms the morning session on Thursday and Friday and sees the bottom three from Group A, which are Richard North, Jarred Cole and Andy Jenkins, being joined by three newcomers to the mix who are Fallon Sherrock, who will need no introduction, Conan Whitehead who lost his tour card at the end of last year, and Scott Marsh who was a regular on the live leagues last year but who couldn’t claim a card at Q-School.

Group B

The second and third placed players from Group A head to this group which will be played on the Thursday and Friday evening slot. Martin Adams and Justin Smith filled those positions and they will join three more newcomers into the week in the form of Jason Askew, a regular on the Live Leagues last season, Rob Collins, who had a decent Challenge Tour campaign a year or so ago, and Jamie Kelling who is another player from the Challenge Tour.

Group Betting

We will have a couple of groups to go at in terms of the group betting over the course of the next couple of days although sadly due to the format and the new players not being announced until quite late on Wednesday very few firms have actually priced up the group outrights for Thursday and the one that has doesn’t really offer a whole lot of value. There is one I’m keeping an eye on the price for in the evening session and if more firms price up throughout the day then I’ll see if we can have a dabble. If I do then I’ll tweet a bet out on our Twitter account – @kevshatsports.

Match Betting

There are 25 matches for us to get stuck into throughout the morning and into the evening and we’ll take on two bets over the course of it. The first of those comes in the morning session where I’m expecting Richard North to have a good end to the week and he can use the advantage of throw to see off Andy Jenkins, who he averaged over 105 against in beating 4-1 on Wednesday. That was the first time that ‘Northy’ has beaten Jenkins this week but incredibly he has averaged higher than him in all three matches they have played against each other. On Monday, North lost 4-3 on Jenkins’ throw yet North averaged 12.96 points higher than Jenkins but couldn’t finish. Terrible finishing was an issue for North over the first two days but he was much better on Wednesday and should be nicely up to speed now. North has been the better player all three days and if he hits the doubles he can square his series with Jenkins here.

Moving into the evening session and I have to keep taking Justin Smith on. He has won enough matches to make it into the better of the two groups on Thursday but that flatters him so much. He has played 15 games so far this week and in six of them he has averaged below 80. Incredibly he has won three of those but I can’t believe any matches will be won in this company without averages north of 85. Smith faces Rob Collins late in the evening and Collins is already a better player than the Welshman as shown not only in his Challenge Tour exploits last year but a perfectly competent showing in the UK Open earlier in the month, where although he went down to Jack Main 6-4 in four of the legs he averaged over 90 and touched that figure in a couple more. This is Collins’ last match of the night and with this group having the player less each game means more so I expect Collins to be bang on it by this time and he can see off Smith whose results have been much better than his performances so far this week.
