2021 Scottish Open Snooker Qualifying – Day 5 Tips and Betting Preview

It is the penultimate day of qualifying for the Scottish Open on Tuesday when another 16 players take to the baize in Barnsley looking for the win they need to secure their place in the main draw just prior to Christmas.

A lot of the bigger players in the qualifying competition for this event have already shown their hand this week but there are one or two highly ranked men on show on Tuesday on what looks to be a competitive card.

Early Sessions

Once again there are two early sessions with the action beginning at 10am and 1pm in them. The 10am session will see Scott Donaldson looking to qualify for his home tournament when he meets the improved Jak Jones in a good clash. The other match to get the action started sees Martin Gould on show. The former German Masters winner goes up against Zhang Jiankang in a match you would expect Gould to win given his status in the game.

Ricky Walden will head up the 1pm session on Tuesday when he looks to qualify for the main draw of the Scottish Open where he will hope to continue his quest for a first title in the UK. In order to get there he will need to overcome the challenge of Steven Hallworth. The other match is a much more low key affair but a chance for two lowly ranked players to progress when Farakh Ajaib takes on Michael Georgiou.

Later Sessions

The Welsh Open champion Jordan Brown is the leading light in the first of the two later sessions. His match begins at 4pm where he takes on Barry Pinches in a match you would expect the Northern Irishman to come out on top in. Over on the other table there is a much more even looking affair between Chris Wakelin and Mark Joyce. Very little separates the pair in the world rankings so that is a big match for the pair of them.

There is one evening session which comes along at 7pm and there is a potentially cracking match among them between the insanely talented Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and the equally as talented Sam Craigie in what promises to be a high quality clash. The other match might not be quite so entertaining but it contains a Home Nations evening winner as Mark King meets the dour Rory McLeod for a place in the main draw.

Betting

I’ll go with the one bet over the course of the day on Tuesday and it comes in that match between the two closely ranked players in the first of the later sessions as Chris Wakelin takes on Mark Joyce. These two men are local to each other so they will know each other pretty well. I do think Wakelin has a bit of an advantage here though because he has played the two qualifying matches for the first two Home Nations events whereas Joyce has seen his held over to the main arenas.

That means Joyce hasn’t played since the English Open a month ago and while he has practice options there is nothing quite like the match environment and Wakelin certainly has that. He not only played both of his matches but he beat Michael Holt 4-3 in both of them so he twice beat a decent opponent and he held his nerve in both contests, something which will serve him well should this one be as close as the rankings suggest it might be. Joyce could be undercooked here but there’s no chance of that with Wakelin so I like him here.

Tips

Back C.Wakelin to beat M.Joyce for a 3/10 stake at 1.91 with William Hill
