2021 The Open Championship Golf – Round 3 Tips and Betting Preview

There are 36 holes left in the final major of the season and the first 18 of those take place on Saturday when we have ‘Moving Day’ at The Open Championship as those who made the halfway cut jostle for position to strike on Sunday.

Those who only just made the cut will go into Saturday knowing that they need a decent day if they are going to be a factor on Sunday while those who have had a good 36 holes will be looking to push on over the third 18 holes so we’re in for another great day of golf.

Round 2 Recap

It was Louis Oosthuizen who started the day with the lead and he finished it with it as well. He actually extended his lead and will go into the third round two clear on 11 under par. He leads by two from the former USPGA champion Collin Morikawa with the 2017 winner of this tournament, Jordan Spieth, another shot back on eight under. There is a trio of players on seven under which includes Dustin Johnson and Scottie Scheffler while Andy Sullivan is on the group on six under. There will be no golf this weekend for the likes of Patrick Cantlay, Francesco Molinari and Henrik Stenson who all missed the cut.

It was a much better second day for us betting wise than the first one with two winning bets from the three we placed. The first two bets won so the profit was secured fairly early on as Padraig Harrington cruised through his three ball on his way to shooting a couple under par. Justin Harding then followed suit but a surprisingly poor round from Christiaan Beziudenhout denied us the clean sweep. Nevertheless, we are back on the right track after that terrible Thursday.

Saturday Betting

We have a third round leader market priced up for Saturday but I think it is impossible to oppose Louis Oosthuizen the way he is playing. He starts the day two clear and four clear of all but two men and the conditions are expected to be the best the longer the day goes on so it is hard to see him going backwards over the round on Saturday. That means someone is going to need to play out of their boots to catch him but there is no shortage of talent in behind and is someone finds a 63 or a 64 he could threaten the lead. This is a major championship and the course is still tough so while I expect Oosthuizen to keep the lead going into the final round, I’m in no real rush to back him at 11/10 or around that price.

Saturday 2 Balls

The field go out in two balls on Saturday with everyone off the first tee just as they have been over the first two days. The first actual pairing goes out at 09.30 BST so it is a pretty long day given that the final pair of Louis Oosthuizen and Collin Morikawa don’t tee off until 15.55 BST. Jordan Spieth is out alongside Dylan Frittelli in the penultimate group 10 minutes prior to that. The TV coverage begins in time for the first tee ball though so there are plenty of good groups to watch throughout the day either on TV or as one of the 30,000+ fans on site. They include the 11.05 BST pair of Rory McIlroy and Richard Bland, Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harington and Matt Fitzpatrick 20 minutes later and Justin Thomas and Adam Scott at 12.05. My bet comes from the third to last group.

Dustin Johnson vs Scottie Scheffler

Match tees off at 15.35 BST

The third to last group out onto the golf course on Saturday is the American pairing of Dustin Johnson and Scottie Scheffler, both of whom will begin their third round on seven under par, four strokes off the lead.

Johnson started out a little slowly in the tournament but he came to the party on Friday and showed some of the form which saw him finish second the last time this event was held here at Royal St Georges. Good drivers of the ball go well here and there are signs that Johnson is getting the chief to cooperate which could be dangerous for the rest of them here. To be fair Scheffler hasn’t done a thing wrong this week but I just wonder if a lack of links experience will count against him now the going is going to get a little tough. Even if it doesn’t, he has many of the same attributes of Johnson only DJ is just a better player. I think that will play out in the scoring where I expect Johnson to come in with a better score than his younger opponent.
