The final round of the Dubai Desert Classic takes place on Sunday where another Rolex Series event will come to a close and someone is going to walk away with a batch of cash and a huge amount of world ranking points.
This was a decent field to begin the tournament with and it is fair to say that the cream has risen to the top which should mean we are in for a wonderful Sunday of action as the Desert Swing on the DP World Tour continues.
Round 3 Recap
Justin Harding began the day with the lead and he will take a two shot advantage into the final round with him but there is a queue of classy golfers snapping at his ankles. Rory McIlroy is the first of those. He is on 10 under par, two off Harding’s lead with Tommy Fleetwood and Erik van Rooyen another shot back. A large group on eight under par are four off the lead and they include Tyrrell Hatton, the defending champion Paul Casey and Bernd Wiesberger. Lee Westwood is one more shot back on seven under.
It was a positive day for us, albeit in fortune circumstances as Paul Casey was two behind Lee Westwood standing on the final tee. Thankfully for us and our three ball bet Westwood made an absolute Horlicks of the hole and ended up making a triple-bogey eight which meant that the par from Casey was enough to give us a first three ball winner of the new DP World Tour season, one we’ll be looking to build on during Sunday.
Sunday Betting
We only really have the outright market to get stuck into on Sunday but as you would expect that centres round Rory McIlroy. I get that he is the favourite but I’m struggling to get his final round at the DP World Tour Championship last season out of my head. I actually think he’s worth taking on but picking who to do it with is less obvious. My gut tells me if you staked something on Tyrrell Hatton, Paul Casey and Bernd Wiesberger you would get a return but it is still relying on both McIlroy and Justin Harding, who tees off four shots ahead of that trio, to have a bad Sunday. I’m not convinced. I have a couple of outside place chances running for me on Sunday so that will do for this market.

Sunday 3 Balls
Once again the remaining players are out in three balls to get them round with the final trio of Justin Harding, Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood teeing off at 07.46 GMT and the penultimate group out onto the golf course of Erik van Rooyen, Paul Casey and Bernd Wiesberger going out 11 minutes prior to that. As has been the case all week the coverage is pretty extensive so we’ll be able to watch all the early groups which is good because my bet comes from the third last group out onto the golf course.
Fabrizio Zanotti/Richard Bland/Adrian Meronk
Match tees off at 07.24 GMT
The third to last group out onto the golf course contains three players who start their final day on eight under par and four back from the leader in Fabrizio Zanotti, Richard Bland and the Polish ace Adrian Meronk.
What I like about this three ball is they have all made their eight under score in different ways. Zanotti and Bland have ridden their putter to this stage whereas it is the long game of Meronk that has got him to this score. I’m not convinced that the putting of Bland and Zanotti is going to hold up in this final round. It isn’t the strength of either of their games and even if it does hold up I think the pins will be tucked away that the long game is going to need to be pinpoint. It isn’t as though Meronk has been terrible with the putter. He is 20 in strokes gained putting for the week but he is a mile clear of his playing partners here in the tee to green department. He ranks 15 in that and 5 on strokes gained on approach whereas Zanotti (39/39) and Bland (37/40) are in the middle of the field for those statistics. Putting all that together I think the value is with the big hitting Meronk in this three ball.
