It is another big day at the top end of Skybet League 2 on Saturday as the promotion chasers look to pick up three valuable points and set themselves up nicely for the final quarter of the campaign. It is no less dramatic at the bottom of the table either so the matches on Saturday are full of intrigue.
Saturday’s matches are as follows:
Accrington Stanley v Colchester United
Barnet v Portsmouth
Blackpool v Crewe Alexandra
Cambridge United v Newport County
Cheltenham Town v Yeovil Town
Crawley Town v Morecambe
Doncaster Rovers v Luton Town
Exeter City v Stevenage
Grimsby Town v Mansfield Town
Hartlepool United v Plymouth Argyle
Leyton Orient v Notts County
Wycombe Wanderers v Carlisle United
Big Matches
The biggest match of the afternoon comes from the Keepmoat Stadium as the leaders Doncaster host a Luton side who head north in decent form and who are battling hard to make it into the top three in the table. Plymouth will be looking to close the gap should Doncaster slip up when they head to Hartlepool while Carlisle will look to build on their win over Doncaster in midweek when they travel to Wycombe in what is another big game.
Best of the Rest
Portsmouth travel to Barnet looking to maintain their promotion push while Exeter welcome Stevenage to St James’ Park. Mansfield travel to Grimsby looking to bounce back from that amazing 4-4 draw with Accrington in midweek. At the other end of the table it is a big afternoon for two of the bigger sides in the division when Leyton Orient host Notts County in a six pointer. Bottom side Newport head to Cambridge.
Betting
Two bets interest me on Saturday. The first is on a Mansfield side who I am going to trust again despite them letting me down in that crazy 4-4 draw. They head to a Grimsby side who have only scored one goal in the three matches since Omar Bogle left them.
That isn’t too much of a surprise as he was a real class act and very much the focal point of their attack, a focus that their attack very much lacked without him when I saw them at the beginning of the month. Mansfield conceded a hatful in midweek but scored plenty too. You wouldn’t think goal shy Grimsby will put many past the Stags so I’m expecting Mansfield to get back to winning ways with a comfortable enough win here.
In the big match of the day I’m expecting to see plenty of goals. You have to go back to Blackpool before Christmas for the last time Luton kept a clean sheet on the road. Indeed Tuesday’s clean sheet was on their second clean sheet in their last 10 matches but they are starting to find the net a lot more.
Doncaster have only failed to score twice in their last 20 matches but they only have two clean sheets in their last seven, one of which was against Newport which barely counts. This match has two of the best strikers in the division on show in John Marquis and Danny Hylton while both midfields have goals in them. I’m expecting this one to go over 2.5 goals particularly as a draw does nothing for Luton.
