2017 Wimbledon Tennis – Day 9 Betting Preview

We now know the identity of the women’s semi-finalists at Wimbledon this year and on Wednesday we will find out who will formulate the line up for the men’s semi-finals when the four quarter finals are played on the SW19 show courts.

With shocks few and far between in the men’s draw – Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka aside – we have an excellent line up for what should be a belting day of tennis. Unlike on Tuesday the weather is set fare so the quality should be high.

Day 8 Recap

What a day of tennis it was on Tuesday. There were straight sets wins for Magdalena Rybarikova, Garbine Muguruza and Venus Williams and then Jo Konta came through an absolute epic against Simona Halep to ensure Karolina Pliskova became the new world number one.

It was another hit and miss day for us betting wise. Jelena Ostapenko was schooled by the old stager Venus Williams but the game line was comfortably covered between Halep and Konta so we came out just under level for the day.

Centre Court

Andy Murray vs Sam Querrey

Andy Murray continues his title defence against the man who took care of Novak Djokovic here last year in Sam Querrey. This will be the ninth meeting between the two with the Scot holding an emphatic 7-1 advantage in their previous matches. Murray won their one meeting this year at the Australian Open in straight sets.

You would be pushing it to suggest Murray has played well in this tournament so far. He dropped a set to Fabio Fognini on Friday and should have lost two of the three sets he played against Benoit Paire on Monday. Querrey has been five sets in the last two rounds but he has a better grass game than both Fognini and Paire so I can see him running Murray close. I don’t think the American is consistent to win but he can ensure we get into a fourth set at the very least.

Milos Raonic vs Roger Federer

The other quarter final on Centre Court on Wednesday is a repeat of the semi-final from last year when Milos Raonic takes on Roger Federer. Raonic won that match in five brilliant sets last year but Federer was a broken man after going five in the previous round.

The roles are reversed this time around with Federer yet to drop a set in the tournament and Raonic coming into the match off the back of a five set epic. Even without that it would be hard to see the Canadian winning this. If I was brave or had no financial interest in Federer I might have chanced him to win 3-0. I still fancy he could but the price is skinny and I’ll just be happy if he wins. The beauty of Federer is you can enjoy him without betting on his matches and that is what I’ll do here.

Court 1

Gilles Muller vs Marin Cilic

The first match up on Court 1 on Wednesday is a repeat of the Queens semi-final which Marin Cilic won in three sets and he is an overwhelming favourite to win their third straight meeting.

Muller goes into this match off the back of that absolute epic against Rafael Nadal on Monday and we will only know how he has recovered from that when he steps onto the court. Cilic has been brilliant in this tournament so far and I expect him to win here but it is hard to get involved in handicaps and such things when Muller is serving so well. I’m on Cilic outright and that is enough of an interest for me here.

Tomas Berdych vs Novak Djokovic

The 28th meeting of Tomas Berdych and Novak Djokovic will round off the action on Court 1 and this could turn out to be the best of the quarter finals. Berdych went five sets in the previous round but Djokovic had to wait until Tuesday to get his last 16 match done.

Berdych produced a serving masterclass in beating Thiem in the previous round and if he serves like that and backs it up in the same way he is perfectly capable of repeating his 2010 semi-final win over Djokovic which would be just a third win against this opponent for the Czech.

I don’t think Djokovic is anywhere near his top form and while I’m not foolish enough to write him off completely I do expect him to have to really battle to come through. Berdych should be good for a set here which makes me think over 3.5 sets is the bet as Djokovic rarely, if ever, gets wiped out in a match.
