Whenever a big sporting event comes around a host of specials markets get priced up for it and that is the case with the PDC World Darts Championship which begins on Thursday. Before it gets going we’ve a chance to look at one or two of them in a bit more detail.

Nine Dart Finishes
One market which is pretty popular is whether there will be a nine dart finish in the tournament and indeed how many of them there will be. Amazingly given the quality on show last year and the talent that got to the quarter finals there was not a single nine dart finish.
You have to go back to the 2012 tournament for the last time prior to that where we have not had a nine dart finish so they are pretty constant in the event and whoever gets one this year will pocket a cool £20,000 if only one is hit. We’ve had a couple of years of multiple nine darters though which adds a spanner to the works. There might be an ounce of value in the 13/8 on just one but it doesn’t massively inspire me.
Most 180s
You would think that the winner of the tournament will win this but that doesn’t necessarily hold sway. Michael van Gerwen won the tournament last year but Gary Anderson hit the most 180s. Whoever wins the event there will always be someone who plays the same amount of matches as them in the tournament.
Those two are the favourites to the most this year too but the issue with backing van Gerwen would be his tendency to switch so often while I’ve claimed already that I’m not sure Anderson will do the course and distance.
It might be worth picking someone in the bottom half to have a go at but my picks from there are Taylor who doesn’t hit many and Alan Norris for whom I’ve fingers in a few pies so I’ll leave this market alone.
Total 180s
This market is much more to my liking. The lowest line on the number of 180s in the tournament is 680.5 and I believe that is very low. We soared past 700 last year and with the qualification criteria even stricter this year I expect that many again and probably more.
There are some insane hitters of 180s in the game right now. Even players who are not seeded such as Dimitri van den Bergh, Christian Kist and Chris Dobey are serial 180 hitters let alone those who are established.
There are 63 matches in the main draw this year plus eight preliminary matches which are the best of three sets now and they are yielding 180s these days. Even were there not to be a single 180 in the preliminary round we would need an average of 11 180s a match. Over the distance of this tournament that is perfectly achievable.
