The winner of the second major championship will be crowned on Sunday night when the final round of the US Open takes place at Shinnecock Hills just outside of New York and we are all set for a wonderful finale to the event.
We have four men tied for the lead heading into the final round and a bunched up leaderboard in behind to give a number of players a chance of winning on what could be a fascinating evening of golf.
Round 3 Recap
It was one of the most controversial days in US Open history on Saturday with the course getting out of hand to the extent that Phil Mickelson actually hit a moving ball to accept a two shot penalty knowing it would take him a lot more than that to get up and down.
At the end of it Daniel Berger and Tony Finau, out way before the carnage begun to post rounds of 66, had sat back for hours and ticked the players off one by one as they went past them. They were matched on +3 for the lead by Dustin Johnson who saw his four shot lead quickly evaporate and the defending champion Brooks Koepka. Justin Rose is a shot behind them on +4 with our outright pick Henrik Stenson a shot behind him on +5.
It was an up and down day betting wise for us on Saturday with Brian Harman safely bringing his two ball bet in earlier in the day but Tommy Fleetwood was nudged out by a shot. In better news Kiradech Aphibarnrat holds a five shot lead in the Asian market and Stenson is bang in the mix for Sunday.
Sunday Betting
We only have the outright market to look into for a big market bet on Sunday and part of me is tempted to back someone in the middle of the field in the hope they can post a score and watch the players come past. The wind is expected to kick up again in the afternoon so an early score could shoot up the leaderboard.
The only problem with that is the majority of the contenders for that role I’m already on outright anyway in Russell Knox, Louis Oosthuizen, Alex Noren and Marc Leishman. Justin Thomas is only five back and is 80/1 which is tempting but he’s out late enough that he’s likely to be playing in the same conditions as the leaders. With that in mind it is the Sunday two balls to lead me to a bet.

Sunday 2 Balls
The final round sees the field out in pairs once again with the leading duo of Tony Finau and Daniel Berger out alongside each other at 19.24 BST. The last two champions tee off 11 minutes earlier than that while Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose are paired up again and go out at 19.02 BST. Much earlier in the day Phil Mickelson is out alongside Rickie Fowler in a pairing which should get the crowd noise going. It is the final pair that bring up the best bet in my eyes.
Tony Finau vs Daniel Berger
Match tees off at 19.24 BST
At the beginning of Saturday if you had said to anyone the final group onto the golf course on Sunday would be the one containing Tony Finau and Daniel Berger you would have had a doctor called for you but that is the case on Sunday.
I don’t see either of these two winning the tournament. By the time they tee off I expect the course to be firmed up and with the wind blowing they will be playing much different conditions to the ones they enjoyed on Saturday but I do think Finau will cope with those conditions the best. Berger probably has the big level experience on his side but he is always more comfortable on Bermuda greens whereas Finau goes well on Poa and we’ve seen numerous times in the past that he is capable of controlling his ball in the wind. I don’t expect either of these two to feature for long but when they sign their scorecards I expect Finau to be penning for a lower score.
