It is quarter final day for the women at Wimbledon on Tuesday with all four matches being played out on the two show courts as the tournament goes up a notch from here on in. By the end of the day we will know the four ladies progressing to the semi-finals.
Serena Williams remains the headline attraction in the draw and while much has been made of the fact that there are no top 10 seeds remaining we do still have a decent line up on show for what should be a good afternoon of tennis.
Day 7 Recap
Manic Monday wasn’t all that manic in truth. Certainly not for the big names at least with the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber all breezing through without dropping a set. It was actually a day where upsets were few and far between too for once.
We came out of the day with two winners and two losers from four bets. Dominika Cibulkova comfortably covered her handicap while Kei Nishikori and Ernests Gulbis combined for more than enough games but sadly Donna Vekic had no answer to Julia Goerges while Gael Monfils lost three tiebreaks to lose to Kevin Anderson.
Centre Court
Daria Kasatkina vs Angelique Kerber
The opening match on the main court sees Angelique Kerber looking to continue her run against the Russian star Daria Kasatkina who will be bidding to make it into the semi-final of a Grand Slam for the first time with a win here.
These two are 3-3 in their career records with the latest match coming at Eastbourne the week prior to these championships. Kerber won on that occasion but it went to a tiebreak in the final set and I fancy we are going to see a lengthy battle between these two once again. Kasatkina looks to be hitting the ball sweetly while Kerber is a wonderful grass court player so unless the Russian freezes on the big stage, which I don’t think she will, I expect this one to contain a lot more than 21.5 games.
Serena Williams vs Camila Giorgi
The second match on show on Centre Court on Tuesday sees the queen of Wimbledon, Serena Williams, back in action when she faces her toughest test so far in the feisty Italian player Camila Giorgi.
Serena holds a 3-0 lead over Giorgi and the Italian has never won a set against the American but I wonder if her best chance comes on this surface and at this time in the Williams comeback. That said beating Serena on Centre Court is always a tough ask and ultimately I expect Giorgi to fall short. There isn’t really anything I like in this one from a betting point of view.

Court 1
Dominika Cibulkova vs Jelena Ostapenko
The first match on Court 1 on Tuesday should be a cracking match as the pocket rocket powerhouse that is Dominika Cibulkova takes on the former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko who is in the quarter final here for the second year in succession.
Both these women are packed with power in their groundstrokes and while the consistency of Ostapenko over the course of the season makes her the better player I’ve seen nothing in this fortnight so far to suggest that Cibulkova should be such an outsider here. The Slovakian has been hitting the ball cleanly throughout the championship and is yet to drop a set. Her consistency has been good throughout and she clearly has the bit between her teeth over the seeding controversy. At odds against I’ll take Cibulkova to be too good for Ostapenko in what should be a good one.
Kiki Bertens vs Julia Goerges
The forgotten quarter final sees the top seed slayer Kiki Bertens taking on Julia Goerges who has found some form from nowhere on the grass and will be eyeing up a spot in a Grand Slam semi-final as a result.
Bertens has already taken care of Venus Williams and Karolina Pliskova already in this fortnight and although she sees herself as a clay courter she has adjusted well to the grass with the firm conditions no doubt helping her. Goerges is also better on the dirt but she has come through some really good matches and deserves to be here. I think Bertens has that little extra and the confidence she should have from beating her German rival 62 61 in the Charleston final could give her an extra edge. At odds against she’s the bet for me here.
