The last 16 of the US Open concludes on Labor Day out in New York on Monday and with big crowds guaranteed it is only fitting that the star names come out to play on what should be another wonderful day of tennis.
The bottom halves of both draws will be played across the show courts on Monday with the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Madison Keys and Maria Sharapova among the big names on the schedule.
Day 7 Recap
It was another exciting day on Sunday with a few surprises along the way. The biggest of those was Dominic Thiem beating Kevin Anderson in straight sets. Elsewhere Rafael Nadal and John Isner were pushed hard before coming through as was Serena Williams. Juan Martin del Potro and Sloane Stephens cruised into the quarter finals.
Sunday was frustrating for us betting wise. We won the overs in the Sevastova match but amazingly Isner and Raonic went five sets and never covered 45.5 games which was unheard of. Borna Coric picked up an early injury which put paid to the overs in his game. Not our day.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
On Labor Day it is probably only right that an American opens up the show on the main court on Monday and that is the case as Madison Keys takes on Dominika Cibulkova in what should be a good start to the day. Novak Djokovic then goes up against Joao Sousa in the other match in the day session with the Wimbledon champion potentially one win away from a juicy quarter final with Roger Federer.
Maria Sharapova gets the evening gig on Ashe once again which is beginning to create some criticism. She goes up against Carla Suarez Navarro in an all seeded contest before the aforementioned Roger Federer looks to take his place in that quarter final when he goes up against John Millman.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
As with Sunday, there are three singles matches on the Armstrong court with Kei Nishikori getting the chance to kick play off. He takes on Philipp Kohlschreiber in what could be a stamina testing match in the heat of the day. Two confident clean hitting women follow them when Aryna Sabalenka takes on Naomi Osaka before Marin Cilic does battle with David Goffin to round off what looks like being an excellent day on the second court.
Grandstand
Just like on Sunday there is one singles match to be played on Grandstand and it will begin after a pair of men’s doubles matches so will take place midway through the day. It sees the two surprises packages going at it when Lesia Tsurenko takes on Marketa Vondrousova for a place in a major quarter final.

Men’s Betting
I’ll go with one bet on Monday and it comes in the opening match of the day where I think Kei Nishikori can cruise past Philipp Kohlschreiber. The German has come through the draw nicely but he’s been taken to four sets in each game. His win over Alex Zverev looks good on paper but Zverev made 53 unforced errors in that match which is a huge number.
Nishikori isn’t going to make that many. He is hitting the ball as sweet as a nut and perhaps the good thing for him given his injury issues in the past is he hasn’t really been on the court much so far. When he has been though he has looked like the man who made the final here in 2014. He is hitting the ball clean from the back of the court and finding his spots on his serve. Nishikori slammed down 49 winners against Diego Schwartzman in the previous round and that sort of number gives me confidence that he’ll cover 5.5 games.
Women’s Betting
There is just the one bet that interests me on Monday in the women’s draw too and that comes in the form of the Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka who I think has the beating of Aryna Sabalenka. Osaka has only dropped seven games in making it to this stage and he hasn’t lost a game in her last three sets albeit against more modest opposition than she faces here.
Sabalenka dropped a set in her opening win which concerns me a little as it is the only time she’s played in the extreme heat and she’ll be out in that here. The Belarusian will be full of confidence after her New Haven win the week before this tournament but at some point she is going to run out of steam. Osaka showed she loves the heat and fast conditions at Indian Wells and she’s huge value at odds against.
Daily Accumulator
It was another bad day for our accumulator on Sunday so we are still stuck on two wins for the tournament and the profit is now down to £51.59. We’ll go again on Monday on a day where the favourites look good things in most matches.
