The second day of action at the Australian Open sees the first round of both singles draws conclude on another huge day of tennis at Melbourne Park. Those who didn’t get their campaign underway on Monday will do so on Tuesday in the intense Australian heat.
Monday was an emotional rollercoaster which saw wins for Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber all in straight sets but we saw the end of the Australian Open career of Andy Murray. The likes of Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Simona Halep come out to play on Tuesday.

Rod Laver Arena
Two American stars are up in the first two matches on the main court on Tuesday. Madison Keys gets her campaign up when play begins. She takes on the home wildcard Destanee Aiava before Serena Williams launches her bid for another Grand Slam title. She takes on Tatjana Maria and then the day session is rounded off with the men’s match between the ATP Finals winner Alexander Zverev and Aljaz Bedene.
World number one Novak Djokovic kicks off the night session when he goes up against the American qualifier Mitchell Krueger before the US Open champion Naomi Osaka takes to the big Melbourne stage when she meets Magda Linette on the final day of a potentially exciting day of tennis on the Laver Arena.
Margaret Court Arena
Brisbane champion Kei Nishikori opens up play on the second court when he faces a qualifier from Poland in the form of Kamil Majchrzak before the Australia star Daria Gavrilova meets Tamara Zidansek. The day session on Margaret Court Arena finishes with a juicy looking tie as Venus Williams takes on the seeded Mihaela Buzarnescu.
The night session gets going with the world number one and beaten finalist from last year Simona Halep in action. She meets Kaia Kanepi in a tough looking clash. They are followed by the French Open finalist Dominic Thiem who goes up against the mercurial but erratic Benoit Paire.
Melbourne Arena
We have a good looking day on the third court and it begins with Karolina Pliskova in action. She goes up against her compatriot Karolina Muchova before the young ace Borna Coric looks for a first Melbourne win when he takes on the Belgian player Steve Darcis. Two women’s matches conclude the day schedule on this court. Laura Siegemund takes on former champion Victoria Azarenka before Sam Stosur faces Dayana Yastremska.
There is just the one match in the night session on this court and I would imagine the stands will be packed for the standout first round tie between the Australian star Nick Kyrgios and the Canadian, former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic.
1573 Arena
Fabio Fognini gets the opportunity to open the show on the newly named 1573 Arena. He faces the Spanish player Jaume Munar before Eugenie Bouchard is given a decent stage to perform on. She has the potential quality of Shuai Peng who has been given a wildcard this year. There is a second men’s match which sees Pablo Andujar going up against the exciting Denis Shapovalov before Elina Svitolina gets her campaign underway with a battle against Viktorija Golubic.
Best of the Rest
Once again if you are up all night watching on TV or the live betting streams, or have a ground pass at the venue there are some decent names to follow around the grounds. Garbine Muguruza and Stan Wawrinka headline the Court 3 schedule while Elise Mertens and Jack Sock are among the big names on show out on Court 7. Hyeon Chung, Dominika Cibulkova, Pablo Carreno Busta, Daria Kasatkina and Daniil Medvedev are among the other seeded players on show over the course of the day.

Men’s Betting
I like two bets in the men’s draw on Tuesday. I’ve already touched on Borna Coric’s poor record in this tournament above and it is generally thought that he doesn’t cope with intense heat too well so a middle of the day match with Steve Darcis might not be the best thing for the young Croatian. I don’t think anyone will describe Darcis as anything special but he does have the ability to hang around and as the heat intensifies Coric could get more and more erratic. I’m not sure if the Belgian will win but there is plenty to suggest he can bag a set.
I’m expecting serve to dominate when Nick Kyrgios takes on Milos Raonic and in turn I’m expecting plenty of games. It doesn’t feel like a match which will be won in straight sets. Their two Grand Slam meetings both went to four sets and with the potential for tiebreaks in this match if this one goes to four sets it is hard to see it being won in less than 43.5 games. Both men rely on their serve and while Kyrgios is probably a better player in the rallies than Raonic, he isn’t going to get many serves back. I’ll take the over there.
Women’s Betting
Jo Konta pulled out of Sydney with a freak neck injury and while she claims all is well in that department now, you wouldn’t confess to thinking she is overly convincing about it. One thing we do know for sure is that in the tournament prior to that, Konta lost to her first round opponent Ajla Tomljanovic in Brisbane and I fancy the Australian is decent enough value to win this one too. Their other meeting was in Brisbane in 2018 when Konta was actually still playing well and a force to be reckoned with. The British number one won that but needed three sets. This Konta is nothing like that one though so I’m with the Aussie here.
Eugenie Bouchard doesn’t win too many matches at the top level these days and I think she’s vulnerable to a Shuai Peng who has been winning a few games since her return from her ban. She won the wildcard qualifier to get her place in this draw and also won a few matches at minor levels. Peng was once in the top 20 in the world and is a Grand Slam semi-finalist back in 2014 so she knows what she’s doing and if Bouchard doesn’t fancy the fight I think the Chinese player can take care of her.
