We have covered the three main markets heading into the new Indian Premier League season so the one last thing we need to do before we get stuck into the match betting is have a look at the team markets and the various specials that have kindly been put together for us.
All eight teams have their own individual batsman and bowler markets priced up and then there are a few overall specials markets to look into as well. Having gone through them all I’ve got another half a dozen bets to keep us entertained.
Top Batsmen
Three of the six bets come in the form of the team batsmen markets and we begin with the Chennai one. Shane Watson and Suresh Raina are all the rage here but I’ve got a feeling that Ambati Rayudu could be the forgotten man here. He needs a big campaign to completely cement his place in India’s World Cup squad and I fancy he can get it. Rayudu was the leading batsman for the Super Kings in their title winning campaign last term, and with a number of aging colleagues in the batting line up he is the one most likely to progress. I think the 9/2 on the improving Indian could be a gift come the end of the campaign.
Moving across to the Kolkata batting line up and Chris Lynn looks to be a penalty kick. Given that he hasn’t been involved in the last few ODI squads you wouldn’t think that he will be involved in the World Cup and that makes him attractive here even at 21/10. Sunil Narine is the classic pinch hitter who’ll go well at times but not for long enough while Robin Uthappa is very hit and miss. The other key men are further down the order and they shouldn’t be at the crease enough if Lynn goes well. Just over 2/1 looks decent enough on Aussie to me.
I very nearly took Rishabh Pant in the outright batting market but I can’t ignore the 7/2 on him in the Delhi one. Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw are a good pair of openers but their job is only to set the innings up for Pant, who is without a doubt the star man in this line up. Whether he’ll bat four or five I’m not sure but he was the leading scorers for the Daredevils as they were last season and has only kicked on since then. 7/2 is a big price given his qualities.
Top Bowlers
Two bowlers stand out in their respective team markets for me for this season with the first of them being the Mumbai Indians one. In fairness I wasn’t going to touch this market but the news that Adam Milne is out for the campaign and Lasith Malinga will miss the first six matches makes Jasprit Bumrah a good looking thing even at 9/4. Bumrah will open the innings and he’ll bowl at the death so the cheap wickets he picks up as a result of that will make him tough for his teammates to overhaul. With the changes to the others when Malinga comes back, the continuity of Bumrah makes him the bet at 9/4.
Umesh Yadav was the fourth highest wicket taker in the entire tournament last year and was eight wickets clear of anyone else on his team and I’m not convinced much is going to change in that regard. On the assumption that AB de Villiers, Moeen Ali and Shimron Hetmyer take up three of the overseas player spots there will only be one for the bowlers which means it is highly likely the Indian bowlers will be relied upon for the Royal Challengers over in Bangalore. Chahal looks to have regressed for me and I don’t see enough in the other bowlers. 10/3 on Yadav will do for me.

Most Sixes
We also have a player to hit the most sixes market which I wouldn’t normally go at but one man jumps out at me at 8/1 which is Chris Gayle. We saw Gayle’s brutality in the recent ODI series between West Indies and England although we knew all about it anyway in fairness. Gayle only played 11 matches last season and only eight men hot more sixes than him in the entire campaign. Gayle takes much better form into the campaign with him this time around than he did then so he looks massive at 8/1. Admittedly he plays on arguably the biggest ground in the tournament in Mohali but that doesn’t really concern me. There hasn’t been a ground built in world cricket that is big enough to contain the ‘Universe Boss’ so I’m all over this 8/1.
