We have reached the quarter final stage of the Wimbledon singles draws and on Tuesday it is the turn of the eight remaining women to fight it out for the four spots in Thursday’s semi-finals of the third Grand Slam of the season.
We saw two seismic shocks in the women’s draw on Monday so the last eight is not exactly as would have been expected, but we should get a tasty day of action with the players that we do have on show nevertheless.
Day 7 Recap
It was billed as manic Monday but in large parts it was damp squib Monday with only one of the six matches on the two show courts being won not in straight sets. Indeed the big three of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal won in straight sets and conceded less than 19 games between them. Serena Williams only lost four games and Simona Halep just six. There were equally comfortable wins for Elina Svitolina and Barbora Strycova. The lengthy matches came on the outside courts where Karolina Muchova took care of Karolina Pliskova 13-11 in the third while Guido Pella took care of Milos Raonic 7-5 in the fifth.
It was an annoying betting day for us with Petra Martic picking up an injury in the second set of what had been a tight match against Elina Svitolina until that stage. To make matters worse Kei Nishikori won but only by five games after a bunch of second set errors saw him leak a first set in 16 against Mikhail Kukushkin. The day was salvaged by Pella and Raonic going five although even that was dampened with us losing our outright bet on the Canadian.

Centre Court
Serena Williams vs Alison Riske (H2H: 0-0)
The first match on the main court on Tuesday sees the new tournament favourite Serena Williams taking on her USA compatriot Alison Riske, who is having quite some run at Wimbledon this year it has to be said.
This is the first time the two have met in competitive play but I would be surprised if they don’t know about each other’s games. Serena looks to be getting better with every match this fortnight while Riske has seen off three seeds to make it to this stage already, including world number one Ash Barty on Monday. I think Riske’s run comes to an end here but I’ve no need to bet on the match as I’m on Serena at 7/2 having backed her at that price to win this quarter.
Jo Konta vs Barbora Strycova (H2H: 0-1)
The second of the quarter finals on Centre Court on Tuesday sees the British number one Jo Konta looking for a place in the semi-finals of a second successive Grand Slam. In order to get there she will need to overcome the Czech player Barbora Strycova.
These two met a couple of years when the Czech won 76 75 in a close match but that was on a hard court and you would think Konta will get revenge on this surface. It must be said we are getting towards the stage where the Briton’s bottle disappears but given that I’m on her for this quarter, effectively now this match, at 5/1 I’m hoping she has another win in her before it goes completely. Strycova can be dangerous for a while but a repeat of her last two performances should see Konta through. I’ll stick with my quarter bet here.

Court 1
Simona Halep vs Shuai Zhang (H2H: 1-2)
In many ways the most intriguing match of the lot on Tuesday is the one that sees the former world number one and previous French Open champion Simona Halep taking on the Chinese player Shuai Zhang for a place in the last four.
Zhang is one of those annoying stories as a punter. She arrived here having never won a match in four attempts and now she is on the verge of a semi-final. Who knows what it is that has clicked with her but in defeating Caroline Wozniacki she proved that she is here on merit. Halep might be the least popular of the quarter finalists in that she ended the magical run of Coco Gauff in the last round. I fancy Halep will have enough to come through here but I don’t trust her enough on this surface to part with any dosh.
Elina Svitolina vs Karolina Muchova (H2H: 1-0)
The second quarter final to be staged out on Court 1 sees the Ukrainian ace Elina Svitolina looking to get back into the semi-final of a Grand Slam when she takes on the exciting and talented Czech star Karolina Muchova.
Both these women have played good tennis at times in this tournament but the immediate question has to be how much Muchova has left after going over three hours with Karolina Pliskova banging big serves down at her. Svitolina is probably the worst opponent she could face now as matches with her are usually extremely athletic and physical. Svitolina took advantage of a couple of injuries to make it to this stage of the tournament but should be in the better shape here too.
I have to say I hate backing Svitolina in big matches with a passion. She’s too mentally weak for my liking in these big games and regularly folds to inferior opponents but she has to be the bet here given the exploits of Muchova the day before. Svitolina won their meeting earlier this year 64 62 and I’ve got to think she covers 3.5 games here.
