We have one of the shorter midweek rounds of matches in this MLS season this week but there are still three fixtures taking place on Wednesday evening and for five of the six sides on show it is an important night for them.
Two of the three matches are live on TV for those of us who will be watching on from the UK while the other game has plenty of streams that we can watch it on so there are ways of keeping tabs on all the action.
New York City FC vs Columbus Crew (00.00)
The first match of the night could be significant in the Eastern Conference where New York City look to continue their hopes of coming out on top in the table when they entertain a Columbus Crew side who might not have given up on the play-offs just yet.
Four points behind Atlanta United and Philadelphia Union but with matches in hand of both, New York City FC will be eyeing up the postseason bye and if they are to go any way to achieving that then this is a match they need to win. The Crew are seven points off seventh place so they have to win this if they are going to launch a late push for the play-offs. I expect NYC to win this one but to give Columbus credit they are unbeaten in their last five matches and merit a bit of respect. I’m happy to leave this one alone.
DC United vs New York Red Bulls (01.00)
Two sides who are currently in the top seven in the Eastern Conference table are DC United and New York Red Bulls and they will be looking to enhance their position heading into the postseason when they meet at Audi Field in the second match of the night.
These are two sides who aren’t in the most consistent form at the present time. DC United actually look in a bit of a slump and I wonder how the Wayne Rooney news has affected them. New York Red Bulls haven’t convinced me as much this season and they have done in previous ones so I have no really strong feeling either way here. I’m happy to sit this one out but will be intrigued to see who launches a run of form in this match.
Los Angeles FC vs San Jose Earthquakes (03.30)
It might be that the best match of the lot is the early morning clash between the runaway leaders of the Western Conference, Los Angeles FC and one of the sides looking to hold their position and reach the postseason in San Jose Earthquakes.
The Earthquakes have been in good touch this season and have impressed many a lot more than they were expected to, but they head to the Banc of California off the back of successive defeats on the road, so the schedule might just be biting them here. You need to be full of confidence heading to LAFC because Bob Bradley’s men have only dropped points in one of their 11 MLS home matches all season.
I think LAFC will win this match, both current form at their home record suggests that but there is enough to think the better bet will be for them to win and both teams to score. Firstly that brings 2-1 into play which will be a losing scoreline if we take the handicap or the over on goals and secondly because the Earthquakes have scored in each of their last 16 matches so even when they lose they find a way to score. Los Angeles have scored 18 goals in their last four home games but they’ve conceded eight in that time too. Odds against on a home win with both teams scoring looks attractive. It has clicked in eight of their home wins this season with one of the ones it didn’t being against Cincinnati which barely counts.
