The MLS season continues on Thursday night when another match in the competition takes place. The Eastern Conference got the bulk of the attention on Wednesday evening but it is the Western Conference that is in the spotlight now.
Sporting Kansas City host Minnesota United in a match which probably feels like it is bigger than it actually is given their respective positions in the league table. Free Sports carries all the action in the UK so we have the watching facilities covered.
Sporting Kansas City
It has been a tough campaign for Sporting Kansas City it has to be said. Consistency has completely left the building and that is not the desired outcome after they pretty much sacked off the initial part of the season when they were in the NACL. That has resulted in them languishing outside the play-off places in the table and although they won against San Jose Earthquakes last time out, you suspect they won’t be around for the postseason.
The big issue they have had this term has been the volume of goals they have shipped. Their 45 goals against is one of the worst in the MLS with only Colorado Rapids and FC Cincinnati offering up worse than that. SKC are usually very good at home but even that hasn’t really been the case this season so there is a lot to work on ahead of next season if we assume that they are not going to make the play-offs.
Minnesota United
One side who look like they are going to make the postseason are Minnesota United, and it will be the first time that they have done so should they go on and make the top seven. They go into this match in second place in the table so if they can pick up a victory here then they are going to consolidate their position and not only be pushing a play-off place but also be in position from which to secure a home game.
That might be significant too because like a number of sides in the Western Conference in particular, the Loons are a lot better on their own patch than they are away from home. Home field advantage in the postseason will be something they will be striving for so with LAFC not for catching, that second spot will mean a lot to them. With that in mind this is a big game for the visitors.
Team News
Sporting Kansas City will be without Rodney Wallace for this match and there is a doubt over the forward Gelso Fernandes. Benny Feilhaber and Johnny Russell will be assigned the task of creating things in front of goal.
Minnesota United are going to be without Kevin Molina for this match while influential midfielder Ozzie Alonso and Angelo Rodriguez are both doubts and they will be missed if either don’t make it for the game.
Betting
I’ve no real opinion on this match I have to admit. If you pushed me into a bet I would go with Sporting Kansas City as they have home advantage but there would be absolutely no confidence behind that whatsoever. They did win last time out though and they have been a class act in this competition in the recent past so it wouldn’t be a total surprise if they launch a late dart for the play-offs.
Minnesota United are in a good position in the table and subconsciously they might decide they can have this match off, as we see so often from road teams in the MLS. That said they have got goals in them so I wouldn’t be confident in anything I looked at and that makes me swerve this one.
