It is a big weekend in the horse racing world with all eyes on Longchamp on Sunday to see if Enable can continue his wonderful record in one of the biggest races on the globe. Before then however we have some decent action in the UK on Saturday and having scoured the cards we have come up with a couple of bets to see us through the day.
3.10 Ascot: Challenge Cup Handicap
Preview
An excellent Class 2 handicap over 7 furlongs featuring 17 runners.
This field has many Ascot standing dishes here and is headed by Raising Sand who loves it here. He won a big handicap here 2 starts ago but is on a career high mark of 109 and it’s probably best to look elsewhere. Similarly, Ripp Orf loves it here and was 2nd here 4 week ago but is another off a mark he will find it hard to win off having been raised another 2lbs.
Betting
The one is Kynren who, admittedly, struggles to get his head in front but is as consistent as they come. Another who loves it here, he has returned money in 13 of his 14 career handicaps. This season he’s been 2nd in the Lincoln, 2nd in the Victoria Cup and 5th in the Royal Hunt Cup when he was drawn on the wrong side of the track. Since having a summer break, he’s been 3rd and 2nd in decent handicaps. The last 3 of those runs have been off today’s mark of 101. Today, he’s back at his favourite track, he’ll get genuine soft ground (which he loves) and there’s an interesting jockey change with today’s jockey being the one to have ever won on him (3 wins from 6 races). Everything looks to be in his favour to finally win a big one.

4.35 Newmarket: Fillies Handicap
Preview
A 12 furlong handicap with 12 runners sees Specialize from the Varian yard installed as favourite. She won a Class 5 3 starts back but has been 2nd twice since being upped in grade. Strelka is lightly raced and progressive but has only won a novice and that was at long odds on.
Betting
It’s better to side with experience and Melburnian is a 4 year old coming over from Ireland. She hails from a top yard and it’s her yard’s only runner in England today. She has yet to win this year but has been running well in decent handicaps and today will get the soft ground she loves (having won on it twice in France). She has a lowly mark and her recent RPRs have exceeded the mark she’s running off. In a 12-strong field, she’s one of only 5 priced lower than 20/1 and she looks a good bet to, at least, finish in the frame.
