We get underway with week nine of the NFL season on Thursday night and we do so with a divisional battle in Phoenix as the Arizona Cardinals host the San Francisco 49ers in the latest battle in the NFC West.
This division is shaping up as the best in football right now and it is the undefeated 49ers who have control of it, but they will know that slipping up is not an option so they need to go on the road and find a win. Arizona need a win as well so we kick off with a cracker.
Arizona Cardinals
The bird gang go into the match with a narrow losing record and will be hoping to be the first team to knock the 49ers off this season. If they are to do that then they are going to need to find a way to get through this tough as teak defence, which is leaving everyone in their wake at the present time. That will mean their offense will need to play a perfect game, with their offensive line having to stand up to one of the best pass rushers in the league right now.
Arizona saw a three match winning run ended by the New Orleans Saints last week and have it just as tough this week. They could give a debut to Kenyan Drake who they traded for over the weekend and that will be big as David Johnson looks like he is out for this match. Kyler Murray is going to have to show all his poise under pressure because his 29th ranked defence is unlikely to help the Cardinals get the job done.
San Francisco 49ers
A lot of people expected god things from the San Francisco 49ers but whether as many thought they would be 7-0 at this stage of the season I’m not so sure. They have passed a number of tests of their credentials but the one thing they haven’t done is go on the road on a short week. If they can come through here then the good it will do them mentally, they could take a whole lot of stopping between now and the end of the season.
The 49ers are getting back to the side which made them so dangerous a few years ago. Their defence is ranked as the best in the entire league, assisted by a brilliant pass rush which has quarterbacks under endless pressure. That is taking the heat off their offense but the California outfit are getting better and better in that department too, as evidenced by the 50 burger they put up on Carolina last week. There isn’t a lot to not like about San Francisco right now.
Betting
I would expect San Francisco 49ers to win this match but as ever I’m always wary about taking road sides on Thursday night, especially one which is being asked to give up double digits on the point spread. I don’t think that is anything like a certainty but again I’m not sure I want to ride the Arizona Cardinals defence against this 49ers offense.
That leads me to the player performance lines where the receiving line for George Kittle is the one which makes the most sense to me. Although Matt Breida has been passed fit to play, you would think the Niners will do a fair bit of business through the air here and Kittle is the man to exploit that. Arizona have been bang ordinary containing tight ends this season. In four of the eight matches the Cardinals have played tight ends have caught for more than 100 yards. Kittle has caught over twice as many passes as the next 49er so I’m expecting him to go for more than 67.5 yards here.
