2019-20 Premier League – Leicester City vs Aston Villa Tips and Betting Preview

There is one match left in the Premier League weekend and it comes along in the form of a Monday Night Football as Leicester City go for a bit of a revenge mission when they host Aston Villa at the King Power Stadium.

It was Aston Villa who denied Leicester a spot in the Carabao Cup final earlier in the campaign, and the form of the Foxes in the Premier League has nosedived since then. Villa will hope to repeat that feat and win here to ease their relegation fears.

Leicester City

At one stage this season Leicester City were being talked up as potential title deciders but they have faded out of contention for that and over the remainder of the season will be looking to consolidate their position in the top four, and hope to end a little run without silverware by challenging strongly for the FA Cup. If they are to give their top four hopes a boost they could do with a win in this match, which would end a bit of a slump.

The Foxes go into the contest with just one win from their last five Premier League outings, and that was against a West Ham United side who were so poor it should barely count. They have made better progress in the FA Cup, but they are yet to take on a Premier League team in that competition. Leicester haven’t scored in any of their last three league outings, so if they are going to turn their form around that has to change.

Aston Villa

Things have not been much better for the Villans in recent times, and they now have to get over the heartache of losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium last weekend. To be fair to Dean Smith’s men, they put up a better fight than was expected of them, but defeat in a cup final still hurts no matter how they perform. The one thing that defeat should have done is give them some belief for their bid to stay up.

The one thing you need to make surviving easier than expected is an out and out goalscorer, someone who will take the heat off the rest of the side, but whether Villa have that is questionable. They do have Jack Grealish as their talisman and he will need to perform to an optimum level if they are going to survive. Villa were unbeaten in both legs of the Carabao Cup semi-final against the Foxes so they know how to get the job done against them.

Team News

Leicester City have issues over Jamie Vardy and Ben Chilwell. Vardy has missed the last few games with a calf issue but Brendan Rodgers is confident he will be fit to return but Chilwell is more of a doubt.

John McGinn is nearing a comeback from a broken ankle but this match is likely to come just too soon for him. Dean Smith has a decision to make in goal after Orjan Nyland impressed between the sticks at Wembley.

Betting

Leicester City are odds on favourites here but it has been a while since they have performed to that sort of level and even though Aston Villa are in the bottom three, I don’t see this match being a walk in the park for the Foxes, especially if Jamie Vardy does not make it back or lacks sharpness in the game. I’m not suggesting that Leicester can’t or won’t win but to win comfortably after the form they have been in might be asking a little too much.

Aston Villa may not be anything special but the one thing we know about them is that they are going to be fighting for their lives and that is appealing from a betting point of view. We also know that tactically they can tame the best that Leicester have to offer too. I wouldn’t be brave enough to back Villa to win this match but Leicester have only won one of their last five at the King Power, so it wouldn’t be the biggest shock if the visitors leave with something, but if they do lose it may not be by more than one given how infrequently the Foxes have won of late. I’ll take Villa on the +1.5 handicap.
