2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Friday 15th May Group 5 Tips and Betting Preview

The first pool of players play for the final time this week in the Modus Icons of Darts event on Friday, as seven stars once again battle it out for a daily title with the quest of keeping us entertained during lockdown.

We have seen one man dominate this set of players so far this week and it will be interesting to see if he completes the clean sweep or whether the field can up their game to deny him. Either way it should be another decent day of darts to watch.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday seven players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the seven players will play each other once over the best of seven legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Thursday Recap

We had the most dramatic group of the week on Thursday, one which went down to the final leg of the whole day and it was joy for David Evans who came out on top on leg difference. Arron Monk went into that final match with five wins from five to his name and only had to beat the up to then winless Keelan Kay for the title but he went down 4-3 to hand Evans the crown on leg difference. Wessel Nijman was just behind them on four wins with Paul Nicholson registering three victories. Darryl Fitton came away with a couple of wins and there was one win each for Scott Mitchell and Keelan Kay.

It was another day where there was a slight loss from us with the bet on Scott Mitchell winning the group being a bit of a horror show. We came away level for the match bets with David Evans covering the handicap against Paul Nicholson once again but those winnings were cancelled out when Scott Mitchell slipped up against Darryl Fitton somewhat surprisingly. It leaves us with work to do for the remainder of the week.

Friday Line Up

Justin Smith is back on Friday looking to complete a clean sweep of wins for the week. He has won both groups so far and a hat trick could await him on Friday. Fallon Sherrock got the closest to him on Wednesday and she will be looking to go one better here. Martin Adams is another player looking to get the better of the young Welshman while World Cup star Boris Koltsov will also be out to make his way to the top of the table.

The other three men on show on Friday have all shown signs of being out of their depth but the longer this week has gone on the better a couple of them have looked That was certainly the case for Diogo Portela and James Hubbard on Wednesday while Keelan Kay finished off Thursday with that creditable win over Arron Monk on Thursday and will be looking to build on that here.

Outright Betting

Given that he has won 10 of his 12 matches this week and the two he lost were both 4-3 I think the 3/1 on Justin Smith to top this group again is just too big. It isn’t like he needs to win all six to top this group. His leg difference so far this week has been +10 and +11 so he could probably even win the group with four wins given how competitive the other six players are and how much they have been beaten each other all week.

Smith has got the late shift on Friday which is a bit of a concern because it will be hard for his motivation to stay intact if he suffers an early loss but those playing at the start of the day are the likely stragglers with the exception of Boris Koltsov so maybe that isn’t the issue that it might normally have been. He begins his quest against Portela, Kay and Hubbard, the three outsiders in the group so there is a good chance to build up a head of steam and at 3/1 he looks the bet in this group.

Match Betting

I’ll go with a couple of match bets over the course of the day as well. I mentioned on Wednesday about Boris Koltsov seemingly having the wood on Martin Adams and he proceeded to beat him again that day. Given that Koltsov will be nicely into his work by the time they meet on Friday, whereas it is just the second match for Adams so he might be working his way into things by this point. Koltsov has 4-0 and 4-1 victories over the three time world champion and that is a decent enough margin to think he can complete the hat trick. Something seems to bring out the best in Koltsov against Adams. He has averaged 105.47 and 94.03 against him and that sort of thing can see him through again.

Fallon Sherrock is in a nice groove at the minute. She was second in this group on Wednesday and played pretty well in the main and then she averaged 120 in a soft tip exhibition against Phil Taylor on Thursday so she should be full of confidence and I expect her to see off Keelan Kay on Friday. Kay put in an average of 90.90 in his opening match on Thursday but in two other games his average was in the 70s and there was one match where he was in the 60s. Kay generally fades as the day goes on as his motivation goes with little to play for and this is his penultimate match of the day so he might be lacking enthusiasm. Fallon still has two matches after this so this should be bigger for her and I expect her to come out on top in it.
