Horse Racing – Beverley Thursday 11th June Tips and Betting Preview

We head towards another busy and big weekend of racing in the UK and Ireland with plenty more meetings on Thursday. There are cards at Beverley, Newbury, Lingfield Park and Yarmouth in the UK while Gowran Park hosts its first meeting since the return over in Ireland.

We’ve had a good look through all the cards for the best bets and have decided on three of them. Despite the number of meetings we are focusing our attention on Yorkshire, with all three bets coming at Beverley.

A Class 4 handicap with 12 pacey types for this 5 furlong race on the stiff Beverley sprint track.  There’s a lot of pace in the field and 3 or 4 who could make the running so it looks likely to be set up for a closer.

Kevin Ryan’s Magical Spirit is the likely favourite & he was in good form last backend but has consequently gone up the weights.  That said, he is still lightly raced.   Paul Midgley knows how to ready a sprinter and has 2 in this field with Line Of Reason, now a 10 year old, fancied to go well.  He may just need faster ground though to show his best.

Betting

Our selection is his other runner, James Watt, who is having his first run for the yard.  He likes to be held up off the pace and is drawn well in stall 5.  From there, he shouldn’t need to expend too much energy getting a good early position but, equally, is unlikely to be boxed in against the rail.

As a 2 year old, he won his first 2 but has been winless since.  However, there’s been a number of good runs in that time & he remains on a very workable mark.   Last time out, he disappointed over 7 furlongs but he evidently didn’t stay so if you look at his form over shorter in this grade last term, his form reads 2232, all off marks marginally higher than this.   He will this ground, just on the easy side of good, and with conditions in his favour, he’ll go close if fit for his reappearance.

Tips

Back James Watt (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 6.50 Coral BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)

12 go to post for this Class 5 handicap off a trip of 7 and a half furlongs.  The two that lead the market are Dawaaween and Dancing Rave.

The former is lightly raced but has only won a handicap on the all weather so has it to prove on turf.  Dancing Rave represents the O’Meara yard and is consistent but both him & Dawaaween have wide draws to overcome.

Betting

From a better draw in 3, our selection is Erich Bloch who is having his first run for the Roger Fell since coming over from Ireland.  It’s a positive that Fell does well with recruits from other yards.

The horse himself is a 9 times raced 4 year old who, as a 2 year old, won once & was 2nd 3 times from 5 starts.  Last term, he started out in handicaps off a mark of 85 and ran 5th of 17 in a Premer handicap.  He was then 10th of 23 in a similarly big handicap when not getting a clear run.  He showed promise both times but looked in need of the 6 furlongs he’d raced over.  Stepped up in trip next time at Roscommon, he faded badly but the vet reported him to be stiff post race so there’s still plenty of hope on the stamina front.   He fared no better on his last start for his Irish yard but very soft ground was against him.

A return to better ground, a significantly lower mark and from a yard in decent nick, he should go well at an each way price.

Tips

PLACED – Back Erich Bloch (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 Skybet BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)

A trip of a mile and half a furlong awaits 11 handicapper’s in this Class 4 heat.  Secretarial is unexposed having raced just 3 times and this is his first time out of novice company.  It would be no surprise to see him be ahead of his mark but he hasn’t run for over a year which is enough doubt to look elsewhere.

Betting

This leads us to 7 year old Hayadh who is a very decent type and should go well dropped to this company.  As a 2 year old, and yes it’s understood that was a long time ago, he was just over a length 2nd to Galileo Gold, a horse who went on to win both the 2000 Guineas and the St James Palace.

The selection goes well fresh as his record shows; he was 1st on debut, then won after 61 days off, won at 20/1 after more than 2 years off and then was a close 3rd on last year’s reappearance when he was done no favours by the draw.

In the last 2 years, he’s won handicaps off 92 (Class 3), 88 (Class 2) and again off 88 (Class 2), the last of those coming in last year’s Thirsk Hunt Cup.  In fact, he opened up last year with figures of 3213 in Class 2 or 3 handicaps off marks between 88 and 91.  His form tailed off thereafter but conditions are in his favour today.  He goes well on this ground and races here off a mark of just 84, his lowest ever mark, and has a good claimer taking a further 3lbs off.

Tips

WON – Back Hayadh (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 9.00 William Hill BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)
