This compelling Championship season continues on Wednesday evening when eight more sides compete behind closed doors for what are three valuable points for most of the teams on show over the course of the night.
The race for promotion and the battle to avoid the drop continue to intensify with every match day in this division and already in this midweek we’ve seen some twists and turns and that is set to continue on Wednesday.
Wednesday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off and TV in brackets)
Preston North End v Derby County (17.00 – Sky Main Event/Sky Football)
Birmingham City v Huddersfield Town (18.00)
Nottingham Forest v Bristol City (18.00)
Sheffield Wednesday v West Bromwich Albion (19.45)

The big match of the evening in terms of the fact that it is the televised game is the first one which sees two sides deep in the mix for the final play-off spot going at it at Deepdale as Preston North End host a Derby County side who look to be flying home in a way that Aston Villa did last season. The other match that involves the play-off chasers is the one at the City Ground where Nottingham Forest, who have their eyes on more than just the top six, host a Bristol City side who are yet to fire up after the lockdown.
The other two matches have the top and the bottom at stake. The last game to kick off comes from Hillsborough where West Bromwich Albion are the visitors to take on Sheffield Wednesday with the away side looking to take advantage of Leeds’ slip up on Tuesday evening. The other match on the night sees Birmingham City looking to plunge Huddersfield Town deeper into the relegation mire when the two sides meet at St Andrews.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets on Wednesday evening with the first of them coming in the live TV match as Preston North End host Derby County. It is the visitors I like here, albeit on the draw no bet market. Derby are on a real charge at the minute and while they took an age to get going, clearly the impact they wanted Wayne Rooney to make has happened and they are now on a run of four successive wins whereas Preston are going the other way. They have only picked up one point from their last five matches and have looked ordinary in both their matches since lockdown to date. Derby have won both their outings since the restart and if there is a winner in this one I fancy it could well be the visitors who come out on top.
Another side who haven’t got started since lockdown are Bristol City and they look there for the taking for a Nottingham Forest side who should really have won both their matches. This is a big match for Bristol City. If they don’t get anything from this one then what looked like a promising campaign could just completely fall apart but that is exactly what I think might happen. Nottingham Forest aren’t always convincing at home but we saw on Sunday that they have all the ability needed to win games at home. They’ll go back into fourth with a win here and be putting pressure on the top two. I think they’ll get that.
