CPL 2020 – Jamaica Tallawahs vs Trinbago Knight Riders Tips and Betting Preview

The Caribbean Premier League returns from the rest day with another double header on Tuesday as CPL 2020 returns to the Brian Lara Academy Stadium in Tarouba. Two of the bigger islands meet in the first of the two games when the Jamaica Tallawahs go up against the Trinbago Knight Riders.

The Knight Riders continue to blaze a trail at the top of the table and are already assured of a semi-final spot. Jamaica can do their chances of making the knockout stages the world of good if they can come out on top here.

Jamaica Tallawahs

It still isn’t completely convincing with the bat for the Jamaica Tallawahs but the good thing for them is that they won their previous match and that will hopefully have given them a platform to build from. The good thing about that win is that they had someone use their head with the bat. This tournament has been littered with braindead batting displays so for someone to appreciate the conditions and work out how to post a score bodes well.

The other positive has been the form of the Jamaica bowling attack. That is likely to be tested to the full here because they are up against a dynamite batting side, but there is confidence in the bowling unit and you get the feeling they will rise up to the challenge. If their batsmen can continue to box clever then the Tallawahs could be the first team to beat the Knight Riders but they will need a near complete performance to get it.

Trinbago Knight Riders

It has been a perfect season for the Trinbago Knight Riders so far. They have played six matches and won the lot. The first five of those they had gone relatively untested but that changed in the last one when they took on the Barbados Tridents who laid the gauntlet down to them. It looked like the Tridents would come out on top but then one of the most unbelievable blitzes of recent times from Kieron Pollard got Trinbago out of trouble and maintained their unbeaten start.

That match was the first time that the Knight Riders’ top order had let them down. Whether that was a bit of overconfidence or something more serious setting in time will tell but the challenge will be on those players to be counted once again. One area which hasn’t let Trinbago down throughout the competition is their bowling attack. They have rotated with the conditions but at no stage have they looked weaker as a result.

Key Men

Glenn Phillips goes into this match as the leading batsman in the competition in terms of runs scored. He was the Jamaica batsman who used his head and got himself in last time out and was rewarded handsomely at the back end of the innings.

Kieron Pollard is beginning to bowl more in this tournament as the wickets tire but he reminded us of his gun strength in the last game when he launched that brutal blitz to overcome the Tridents. Generally when he gets going his form remains a constant for a while.

Betting

This isn’t the easiest match to bet on but I’ve scoured the markets and I’ve come up with what I think is a good thing. It is the runs line for Glenn Phillips where the 19.5 runs target might not be high enough. I say that not just because he is the leading run scorer in the competition but because he seems to have worked out that this is not a tournament to get hell for leather from the off. That might mean it takes him longer than he normally would to get to 20 runs but in theory it gives him a better chance of getting there.

Phillips likes playing against the Knight Riders. He has made 50s against them in his last two innings against the Trinbago outfit and comes into the match off the back of one of the best judged innings of the tournament. There is nothing new in the Trinbago attack that the New Zealander won’t have seen before and with this being the first match back on this ground after more than a week away the pitches should be decent enough first up. I like the over here.
