The Super League week continues on Friday night when another double header of action takes place at the Totally Wicked Stadium as four teams look for a win which will do their point percentage more good as the battle for the postseason begins to intensify.
To be fair two of the teams on show already know that Old Trafford isn’t going to be for them this season barring something bordering on a miracle but the other two are very much in the mix. Both these matches are on Sky Sports once again.
The Format
There has been a change in the format of the season. The ‘loop matches’ and Magic Weekend have bitten the dust so teams will play 20 regular season matches ahead of the playoffs. Scrums are a thing of the past for the remainder of the season. They are being replaced with a tap restart to prevent the spread of the virus. The ‘six to go’ rule that is being used in NRL is also coming into the Super League with more eyes likely to be on the game with other sports yet to get back up and running. It has since been announced that the Super League table will be based on point percentage rather than total points.

St Helens vs Hull KR (18.00)
The opening match of the two on Friday evening sees the home team for this weekend in action when St Helens take on Hull KR for the second time in the space of about three weeks as the champions look to continue their title defence.
Saints have been in brilliant form since the restart and go into this match off the back of five successive wins and will be expected to make that six on the bounce. Hull KR are giving sides problems even though they are not always picking up the results they would like, although their win over Wigan Warriors last week was a reminder that they shouldn’t be written off because they are more than capable of being dangerous. That puts me off chasing a big handicap on Saints but I wouldn’t want to take them on either.
Leeds Rhinos vs Huddersfield Giants (20.15)
The last Super League match to take place in England this weekend sees the former champions Leeds Rhinos taking on Huddersfield Giants in a tough looking Yorkshire battle. These two met the week the competition resumed and played out an epic which the Rhinos won via a golden point.
If we get something similar to that here we will be in for a great game but I expect the Rhinos to win a little easier than that. They were clearly rusty that night and while their form since lockdown hasn’t always convinced, it is only Wigan Warriors and St Helens who have beaten them since the restart, and Leeds were without some big guns in those matches. The win over Salford Red Devils was more like them. The Giants looked like they were in good order for 70 minutes of their match against the Rhinos but they collapsed in the last 10 minutes and have got worse since then, although injuries have been a major reason for that.
The Giants are getting players back for this match though with Aidan Sezer, Ashton Golding and Darnell McIntosh all back in the squad while Chris McQueen is set for his debut for Huddersfield. I don’t know whether that means the Giants will win the match but it gives me more confidence that they can remain within a dozen points of a Leeds side who need another big performance or two before I’m convinced again.
