2020 Scottish Open Golf – Final Round Tips and Betting Preview

The second Rolex Series event of the season comes to an end on Sunday when the final round of the Scottish Open is played out at The Renaissance Club on a day where the weather is set to be filthy to add another element to what has been an excellent week of golf.

Conditions visibly worsened as play went on throughout the third round on Saturday but with the added pressure of pay day and potentially the trophy in sight for many on Sunday, we are set for a fascinating finale to the event.

Round 3 Recap

Robert Rock is the man who will take a two shot lead into the final round. He sits at nine under par after 54 holes but there is a cavalry waiting to charge at him from seven under. They include our pre-tournament pick Marcus Kinhult as well as the favourite for the tournament in Tommy Fleetwood. Ian Poulter and Wade Ormsby complete the group on that score and they are another two shots clear of a quartet of players that includes Victor Dubuisson and Andy Sullivan among others. Eddie Pepperell and Lee Westwood loom ominously on four under.

It was another disappointing day on the betting front for us. Lucas Herbert bogeyed his opening two holes and was never at the races from there onwards and although Robert Rock couldn’t break par he actually held himself together better than I expected him to in fairness so that was another loser. That means we could do with Kinhult at least hanging on to a place to come out of the week on top.

Sunday Betting

We have the outright market to go at on Sunday and a couple of finishing position ones but in truth I’m happy to leave them alone. I certainly don’t need to get involved in the outright market again as I’m more than covered in that with Marcus Kinhult, who even in the tough conditions made six birdies on Saturday so if he keeps the bogeys off the card he will have every chance of chasing Rock down. As for the finishing positions the field are out in a condensed wave of tee times so there isn’t going to be the chance for someone to post a score in nice conditions and watch everyone whizz past them. That puts me off getting involved in them too. Kinhult is carrying our Sunday money in these markets.

Sunday 3 Balls

With the weather that’s around likely to slow down the play and darkness likely to set in earlier the decision has been made to send the field back out in three balls for the final round off the first and the tenth tee. The last group off the first goes out at 11.40 BST and consists of Robert Rock, Wade Ormsby and Tommy Fleetwood. Marcus Kinhult, Ian Poulter and Adri Arnaus are in the penultimate group and they go out at 11.29 BST but it is a group off the first tee slightly earlier than that which catches my eye for a final round bet.

David Horsey/Eddie Pepperell/Callum Shinkwin

Match tees off at 10.45 BST

The fifth to last group off the first tee contains the English trio of David Horsey, Eddie Pepperell and Callum Shinkwin, three men who are only five back and who will fancy their chances of potentially snatching the title if they can hang tough over the final 18 holes.

All three of them did exactly that on Saturday with Pepperell and Shinkwin moving up a few spots on the leaderboard. Shinkwin and Pepperell both have previous with this tournament, Shinkwin more than Pepperell after he threw away a commanding position a couple of years ago and it is that which concerns me when it comes to him. Horsey has put his score on the board in the better conditions in the main this week and I’m not convinced he can be taken in tougher times Pepperell is a past master when the going gets tough and I think he is the man who can hang the toughest in this test. You need patience, precise iron play and a good temperament in these conditions. Pepperell has that in droves and I fancy him to win this three ball as a result.
