We have had the women’s semi-finals in the French Open and on Friday we will get the men’s last four action played out on Philippe Chatrier Court at Roland Garros on what should be a belting day of tennis out in Paris.
We saw the Australian Open champion reach the women’s final on Thursday and on Friday the men’s winner of that tournament will look to follow suit on a day where four top class clay courters battle it out for a spot in the final on Sunday.
Day 12 Recap
We had a couple of straight sets semi-finals on Thursday with Iga Swiatek every bit as dominant over Nadia Podoroska who froze a little in the biggest match of her life but she was always going to have her work cut out against the teenager. The other match was much more competitive but it was Sofia Kenin who came through in two close sets to deny Petra Kvitova a place in what would have been her first French Open final.
We only had the one bet to keep us entertained on Thursday and it delivered a profitable day as it came in the form of Sofia Kenin winning her semi-final against Petra Kvitova. We wasn’t particularly worried how she won as long as she did but a straight sets win meant that there was little tension at any point which is the best way to get a winner! Hopefully that sets us up for a decent end to the tournament.

Diego Schwartzman vs Rafael Nadal
The first men’s semi-final is a repeat of a clash from the Rome Masters a few weeks ago as Diego Schwartzman takes on Rafael Nadal. If you are not aware of the fact that Schwartzman won that match I would imagine within five minutes of the coverage starting you certainly will be.
Schwartzman won that match fair and square as well although it was the first tournament that Nadal had played in since lockdown as he didn’t travel to New York for the US Open or the Cincinnati event that was played there before it. That is no excuse though and Schwartzman deserved his win. He looks ready to keep this one fairly close as well as long as his legs aren’t too heavy after his five-hour marathon with Dominic Thiem.
Luckily for those of us who want a competitive spectacle here that match was on Tuesday so the Argentine has had long enough to recover and go again. I don’t think he beats Nadal here but I don’t see Nadal having it all his own way. Schwartzman didn’t just beat him in Rome, he won in straight sets so there is enough to think he can at least take a set from the Spaniard before this one is over. I like over 3.5 sets at even money.
Novak Djokovic vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
The second semi-final sees Novak Djokovic continuing his quest to be the only player to win two Grand Slams in 2020 when he takes on a player with his eyes firmly on a maiden Grand Slam title from here on in through the form of Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The Greek star will be looking for a place in a second successive final having reached the title showdown in Hamburg in the lead up to this tournament and after seeing Djokovic needing plenty of treatment on his neck in his win over Pablo Carreno Busta, Tsitsipas must be liking his chances here. Djokovic came through without too much trouble against PCB, causing the Spaniard to question just how injured he was, but these neck issues don’t seem to be going away.
Those of you who followed the tips in our outright preview don’t need to bet in this match as we are effectively on Tsitsipas at 17.5/1 having backed him to win the tournament at 35/1. He lands the place money with a win here and I don’t think he is without a chance. I’m happy enough to let that bet ride without the need to chance something else.
