Other Sports

We are heading towards the end of the tennis competition and we’ll preview the penultimate day of that sport elsewhere, as we will the quarter finals of the men’s football. The other sports to progress on Saturday include the golf where the men’s third round will be played, the beach volleyball, handball, baseball, water polo, basketball, hockey, boxing and diving. There is so much to enjoy over the course of Saturday.

Hockey

It is the final day of action in the group phase of the women’s hockey competition and there are still places in the quarter finals up for grabs on what should be an exciting day of hockey across the pitches out in Tokyo. The highlight match for us in this part of the world is the one between Ireland and Great Britain but it is another match I have my betting eye on.

A couple of wins in their last two matches have Spain in a good position from which to qualify for the quarter final but they need to beat the tournament host Japan in order to guarantee they make progress to the next stage. Japan are yet to win a match in the competition and are probably only in it because they host the Games, it isn’t a sport that is high up in the pecking order for Japan. To be fair to them they have been competitive in all their matches but I like the way Spain are clicking into gear at these Games and I expect them to win and cover a 1.5 goal head start. Their two opening defeats were to the top two in the table but they have beaten the two teams around them and looking to be finding their confidence. I expect them to put Japan to the sword here.

Swimming

It is the penultimate day of action in the swimming pool and that means time is running out for Great Britain to add to their gold medal tally. They do have a live chance on Saturday though. The highlight race of the morning session is a tasty looking Women’s 200m backstroke final where just 0.19s separated the top three qualifiers from the semi-finals however the race I’m looking forward to from a betting point of view is the last one in the session – the Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay.

Great Britain were the fastest qualifiers for this final and while the likes of the United States and one or two other countries will bring other swimmers into their side, Britain will too as Anna Hopkin, seventh in the Women’s 100m Freestyle final, will come in to swim the final leg. The big thing for the Brits in this final is that Adam Peaty is a country mile clear of anyone in the breaststroke so Britain have a massive advantage there. Hopkin isn’t going to lose too much time on the last leg and James Guy is more than competitive in the butterfly department. If Kathleen Dawson can keep Britain in touch in the backstroke they could land another gold medal at a huge price.

Athletics

The first real big feature race of these games takes place on Saturday afternoon when arguably the best set of women’s sprinters ever to come together race it out for the gold medal in the Women’s 100m, the flagship race of the meeting. Elaine Thompson won the title in Rio in 2016 and after getting married she will look to defend the title under her new name of Elaine Thompson-Herah. The gold medal looks to be a straight race between her and her Jamaica teammate Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

British eyes will be on Dina Asher-Smith who is a great prospect but I think she has something to find on the big two. There is a bronze medal up for grabs here though because Sha’Carri Richardson was banned from the games for a recreational drug abuse penalty. I’m only interested in the gold here though and I can’t see anyone getting the better of the Jamaican pair. I’m going with Fraser-Pryce here though for a few reasons. Firstly she has the easier of the three semi-finals so can cruise through that race whereas Thompson-Herah has a nasty looking draw with Blessing Okagbare and Asher-Smith in her heat. Another reason is that Fraser-Pryce has the two fastest times in the world this year including a 10.63s which was her personal best which shows she is as good as ever here. Since landing the bronze in Rio, Fraser-Pryce has kicked on again and won the world title in 2019 and the even money that this winning machine lands gold here is too big to turn down with so much in her favour.
